Cingular is Dead, Long Live AT&T

AT&T today has begun to phase out the Cingular name in favor of its own name. Learning lessons from the past Cingular will be known as AT&T, not AT&T Wireless.

In addition to the massive national advertising to let customers know that “Cingular is now the new AT&T,” the all too familiar Cingular “Jack”, which was made from the AT&T logo, will be phased out and spin into the AT&T globe once again.

Cingular will also notify subscribers about changes on their bills, and promote AT&T wireline service in retail stores that are located in AT&T service areas.

What a complete waste of money to go from AT&T to Cingular and now back to AT&T…

well it only cost them a few hundred million (which they could have easily given to me) to get all of that branding and marketing and make their name and service identifiable… why they would ever decide to do this is … beyond me… I’m guessing its to give them a more serious look to help them appeal to business users … their image at the moment seems to be more geared towards soccer moms and the casual cell phone user …. little orange dude is just to perky and friendly to appeal to business gurus, IMO anyway.

The name “AT&T” has been flip-flopped around so much in the last 10 years or so, with most products/services named as such lacking in sales. Why would they kill of the Cingular brand after having it do so well for several years now?

Sounds to me like the new CEO wants to get canned faster than the previous. Maybe those guys at AT&T are high on something?

On a side note, with all of the respected gaming/entertainment resources available on the web, why would AT&T even waste the advertising money and resources to create the AT&T Blueroom? They promote it as being the gaming/entertainment mecca. Right. I’m sure all of you have heard of it, and use it daily.

A – “Yes, no you can get it with AT&T!”

Throw me in with the “why?” crowd. All I remember about AT&T wireless was that my dad got it on discount for his job and the coverage in his area sucked to the point that he had to switch, and I know of others who had similar experiences. Why would they switch from a clean name to the sullied AT&T branding?

Actually it seem to be kind of a mixed bag today … there were some AT&T ads about the merger, but all the Cingular ads and web sites look to be intact …
