Woman sentenced for killing cyclist while downloading ringtone
How strange to see a story such as this after hearing a Verizon commercial about hearing a song on the radio and having the ability to download the track directly to your mobile handset. A young woman was sentenced for striking a cyclist while downloading ringtones to her mobile handset.
The 25-year-old former Champaign resident, a University of Illinois mechanical engineering graduate working for Caterpillar in Peoria, died on Sept. 8 from head injuries he received Sept. 2 when Stark hit him with her car because she was downloading ring tones to her cell phone instead of paying attention to driving.
It was only a matter of time before a cellphone related accident involving active ringtone downloading while driving surface. Will such a scenario prompt increasing laws forbidding the use of mobile phone while driving? Or, will a larger push be made for voice activated commands? “Download xxx ringtone by xxx artist”. I think cellphone will soon be emblazoned with warnings stating that dangerousness of downloading and driving. “Friends don’t let friends download and drive.”
