Vintage Web Surfing

Web browsing has certainly developed in its very short lifespan. We now have CSS, Flash, AJAX all terms readers of this site should be familiar with. But how many people know of Lynx, HotJava, and Mosaic?

If you are like me, pining for retro technology – vintage browser emulation should warm your heart! Just select a long deceased web browser from the list on the Dejavu website, plug in your favorite web address and see what it would look like if it existed in 1992.

Enjoy!

Webmasters should still use Lynx. Lynx “sees” websites like most search engines does. So it’s good to use to ensure that all keywords get in, and that every image has alt text and descriptions.

    Does CyberDog work in classic?

I prefer “links” to lynx, it supports tables and SSL (http://links.sourceforge.net/). Another nifty “light” browser is Dillo. Its very fast and it has a GUI.

CyberDog does work in classic. Is there a UB version of LINKS?

  • Dogcow

As long as you have the developer tools, LINKS should compile fine (typical ./configure;make;make install). I have a PPC version, but I dont know how to cross compile yet to make an x86 version.

That would require me installing developer tools…. Anyone up for the task?
