Parallels beta build with Windows apps in the dock

Parallels is non-stop with their software updates. The latest beta updates include a number of anticipated improvements including USB 2.0 support, improved Boot Camp partition [NTFS & FAT32] support, and the ability to place individual Windows Applications icons directly in your dock providing instant Coherence mode.

Windows apps in the dock

For anyone stumbling with the necessary steps to get a Windows application added to the dock, follow the steps below:

  • Open your Windows applications within the Windows environment via Parallels.
  • Start Coherence mode which will add the Windows application icon to the OS X dock.
  • CTRL + Click on the Windows app icon and select ‘Keep in dock’.

Running a Windows application from the OS X dock will automatically open the app in Coherence mode as though it were an actual OS X application.

    Derek, chieftain, champion of justice.. because i’m weak and dont want to go ask about it on the parallels forums, i figured i’d ask you, king of all your macs are belong to us…

    i have a macbook pro c2d, with a 21″ lcd hooked up to it. when in coherence mode (or full screen), it only takes up a small portion of the 21″ external lcd, i tried playing with the customizations to tell it to exclude the dock, yet it still leaves a good 100 or so pixels on the top and is the maximum size it will increase. you had any issues with that? if you need to, tell me to bug off and ask in the parellels forums. :)

    Seth what are you settings in the configurations for Parallels?

    For Coherence settings I have Windows Task bar: Show and Relocate Automatically ‘unchecked’.

    Working area: Exclude dock “checked” and Use multiple displays “unchecked”.

    For Screen Resolutions I have Enable custom screen resolutions checked.

    From my understanding, that last option will allow Windows to resize the work environment.

    Aha, that seems to be the difference maybe.. i don’t have “Enable custom screen resolutions” in “Parallels Desktop | Preferences” or under “View | Customize”; That could be why my windows/parallels resolution is at such a weird one. Anyway, for a work around, i decided to move parallels to my primary display (which is my macbook pro’s display) instead of having it on my external lcd’s display. This definitely works better.
