New York – Gender is personal choice

Separating anatomy from what it means to be a man or a woman, New York City is moving forward with a plan to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate even if they have not had sex-change surgery. [...] Applicants would have to have changed their name and shown that they had lived in their adopted gender for at least two years, but there would be no explicit medical requirements.

Thoughts on the topic? The plan has not made it through approval yet. Read the full article at the New York Times.

Thoughts? Uh, this is just plain stupid. Not much thought required to come to that conclusion.

Sounds like a good way to get around the ban on gay marrage. Now partners can have one of them change their sex and then get married as a man and a woman. Though i doubt the gay community will accept this as a booby prize toward their marriage rights, but maybe working towards something here for them. No probs here with me. But i also dont care for NY anyways.

I’m all for it. Does it really affect me in any negative way if someone’s birth certificate says that they’re a male, female, sheep, alien, cinder block, whatever? If it makes an aspect of their life easier, happier, safer, or whatever, I’m down for it.

Sex and Gender are very rigid in our society, and for the vast majority, that’s fine, but I empathize with those who don’t fit in to those two categories so cleanly.

Seeing as it doesn’t affect anyone but the person making the choice, why would anyone have a rational problem with it? Its such a non-issue, I honestly wonder why it made it up here other than its about NYC – which we all know makes it instantly newsworthy. Sometimes.

John: how exactly is it stupid?
