Hack your “Series 2″ DirecTiVo

A huge bulk of TiVo’s customers are subscribers to the DirecTiVo service. But if you are a DirecTiVo customer, you are more then aware of some limitations that DirecTV puts on your box. A neat little program called “Zipper” is to the rescue!

The “Zipper” is one of several methods that can be used to enable certain networking features, such as telnet, FTP, MultiRoom Viewing (MRV), and Home Media Option (HMO), with a Series 2 DirecTiVo.

Although this is not new, this script automagically enables the USB ports on the back of your TiVo which opens the door for networking your TiVo allowing you to transfer shows between TiVos, stream music and photos from your PC as well as controlling your TiVo over a web page. Basically, all the good hacks (MRV and HMO) for these machines are included in the Zipper.

Mind you this is not for the faint of heart, but for the daring folks out in computer land – this is right down your alley!

Now maybe someone out there can figure out how to hack my Moxi DVR I have through Charter (now NewWave Communications). Stupid thing has 2 USB ports on the front, and I’m pretty sure it has two on the back along with a firewire port. The purpose of the USB on the front – to load pictures for a slideshow from a thumbdrive. GRRRR
