Current state of web 2006

What a disheartening day to open the feed reader to discover two disgusting web related atrocities. It’s news stories like these that make me want to unplug and rethink my current interests in the latest happenings of the internet.

Disappointing news snippe number one? An Ars Technica article concerning worldwide internet phishing attacks – more importantly, the fact that the U.S. leads the world in phishing.

The United States leads the world in phishing sites, according to new results from PhishTank. The group has just released its statistics from October, and they indicate that the US hosted 24 percent of all phishing sites in the world last month. South Korea was next with 14 percent, and India came in third with eight percent.

Disappointing! Nearly a quarter of all phishing schemes are initiated in the U.S.! If that doesn’t make you go blech, consider this second news announcement. According to BetaNews, Yahoo is planning on delivering banner ads to mobile phones!

Yahoo is embarking on a pilot program in which it sends graphical advertisements to mobile phones and other wireless devices, testing the effectiveness of brand advertising on small screens. The ads, 150×21 pixels in size, will be delivered to users of Yahoo’s Mobile Web service.

Yes, please cramp our mobile screens with banner ads. I had too much screen real estate as it was. Mozilla should hurry up and deliver a mobile version of Firefox with mini extensions. That way we can all enjoy the convenience of adblocking on our screens.

Mozilla? Why not just go Opera on your phone. It’s already there for the mobile. Not shure about adblocking though since it’s been a while since I used it myself, but I recall being able to block images :)

Regarding the phishing attacks; It’s interesting… because the government can track down one posting that seems like a terrorist threat, when taken out of context out, amongst 1 million other posts on an internet BBS. Yet they can’t even make a dent in phishing to deter it in the slightest.
