WordPress.com offers domain mapping / registration

WordPress.com’s recent announcement that the service would offer users domain registration and mapping makes me question what the point of running a self-hosted blog is. If prominent bloggers – like Scoble – can rely on WordPress.com servers, why can’t the average Joe?
It’s here: you can now use your own custom domain with your WordPress.com blog. For example, if your blog was currently at example.wordpress.com you could buy example.com from us and we would automatically move your blog over and redirect all your links and readers to the new domain.

Powered by WordPress, managed by the WordPress Gods that be. What else is there to ask for short of FTP access to edit core files (who really mucks around with those anyway?).
