You know traffic couln’t get any worse if…

You know traffic couldn’t get any worse if you end up having to sleep in your car.

Officials said the traffic jam caused by the incident in the westbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway in Honolulu was the worst in Hawaii’s history.
Many commuters slept in their cars overnight or just abandoned them on the freeway.
Cars were videotaped on the side of the road after overheating or running out of gas.

And I thought a three hour commute to go 40 miles was bad. Next time we all complain about traffic, let’s all remember how bad it could really get.

god.. even being from Los Angeles I found that to be hell. I know I get 5-10 mph on the freeways here during rush hour, but thank god i never ran into a backup so bad that I could get out of my own car. One reason for that is Los Angeles is full of freeways going every which direction, so if there is a freeway closure they just divert traffic to another freeway, or people get off and take a major boulevard.

Heck, if I was stuck in that traffic, after 1 hour of getting my frustration out, I think i would eventually take advantage of what i am stuck in and make new friends on the freeway and have a mini party, lol

The funniest story I heard about being stuck in traffic is my grandfather one day was stuck on the freeway and saw an ice cream truck next to him, he rowed down the window and asked for ice cream since he had kids in the car, lol. The ice cream man was shocked, lol.

I grew up in Honolulu and it never used to be that bad.

When I was back there in December 2004, my fiancée and I got stuck in traffic for… I don’t know, an hour or so. At one point, we sat, in once place, without moving at all, for about thirty minutes. It was horrible.

I’ve heard from friends still living there that the traffic just keeps getting worse. I want to move back, but it’s stuff like this that keeps me away. I wonder what “miracle solution” they’ll come up with this time (sorry, that’s really only funny if you’ve lived in Hawaii).

14 hours?! That is so crazy. How could a traffic jam possibly last that long? I can usually stand jams because I just listen to my music to pass time, but I could imagine everyone was going absolutely bonkers after that long of sitting and waiting and hoping the madness would end. What happens if you have to go to the bathroom?

For all you who are also reading the Dvorak blog, please excuse the cross post…

When I went to the last Phish concert in 2004 we got stuck in traffic getting into the show that literally lasted 30+ hours. We first ran into traffic late Thursday night and didnt get into the show until mid-day Saturday, spending both Thursday and Friday nights in the car. So I would say it took us about 38 hours to go between 7-10 miles? At the worst point the traffic was backed up on a 2 lane freeway and 2 lane access road for over 15 miles.

By the end, we finally had to ditch the car and hike in part of the way to the show. Eventually they had to start turning cars away, so people ditched their cars on the side of the freeway and walked in, leaving an estimated 25,000 cars on the road. The whole thing was a complete mess…and I think its pretty safe to say that this had to be in the top 2-3 traffic jams of all time.

I am always amused because I learned that this is the only “Interstate” highway in Hawaii. Question is, to which OTHER state(s) does this interstate go? Obviously they wanted their share of interstate highway funding, but I think it should more accurately be INTRAstate.
