Trust the Web for your own check book balancing

It’s sites / services such as ClearCheckbook which make me stand back and scratch my head. Why would someone, with an account at a major banking institution, care to utilize a third party service for balancing their checkbook? Why? What with most banks offering a robust online banking solution for each account holder, I find third party – online – services nothing more than a privacy concern.

ClearCheckbook is a totally free and simple way to keep your finances organized online and balance your checkbook all in one place. You can keep your balances updated from any computer with internet access. No more worrying about holding on to receipts or forgetting about a purchase. Simply log in and add the amount to your online checkbook and we’ll keep track of it for you.

I can understand the added convenience, but constantly logging into a web based services may prove inconvenient in the long run. Thoughts?

Since I can see my check card holds and debit purchases online pretty much immediately, this would be a waste of time for me. I’d rather just write everything down in my own checkbook register.

I can’t see this actually being helpful. I have friends who are terrible at balancing their checkbooks, or verfiying credit card charges and payments, who might think this was a good idea after another brutal round of late fees or bounced checks. However, if they can’t throw all the receipts in a cookie jar and look them over once a month, there is no way that they’d reliably find a computer and internet access every time they bought anything! People who are unable to remember to balance their checkbooks, etc. ought to just pick a single bank, and stick to it for everything, rather than add another layer of stuff to forget about till too late.
