NEXTfest: Lifestraw

The Lifestraw, developed by Vestergaard Frandsen, hopes to help eliminate waterborne illness like diarrhea and typhoid, which claim the lives of more then 6,000 people a day. For the price of a Happy Meal, the LifeStraw kills 99.9 percent of the disease-causing microorganisms in drinking water.

It is a three stage filtering system with carbon filtration that has a lifespan of 185 gallons, which is what an average person consumes in a year.

Being an avid hiker, I was undoubtedly intrigued by this. I gave the manufactuer a call (North American Division) and was told that it is not available for sale in the United States until the EPA approves this product.

Come on, something like this is totally revolutionary. Leave it to the U.S Government to drag it’s feet on anything deemed productive to society.

I wonder how much more effort is required to pass water through the straw compared to a unfiltered straw.

Ooh! Ooh! Show the pixel roller. That was my favorite from the site, but this was pretty awesome too.
