Full length movies hit the cellphone

Sprint has launched today Sprint Movies, the first “pay-per-view” service for mobile phones in the U.S. (Which consequently is the only service area that Sprint supports with their EVDO network)

They are charging between $3.99 and $5.99 for movies such as “National Treasure,” “Spider-Man 2″ and “Scarface,” as well as other movies from Buena Vista, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and Universal Pictures. More importantly all the titles from Sprint Movies are edited, when necessary, to meet TV-14 standards.

I am a huge movie watcher, but with my iPod video and all my other gadgets, this may just be overkill. Who would want to watch a movie on a 2.2″ screen?

    I agree completely. Only a complete bozo would opt to watch an entire film on his phone, even if it was free. Sprint has found a new way to suck.

    Actually I disagree. Look at the folks who utilized EV-DO, a smartphone, and a Slingbox to make the same thing happen for free*. It’s just the next step in bring entertainment to you in a unified device.

    Sure you could travel with a phone, a pda, a ipod (for music), and a PMP (for movies) but imagine what it would be like to combine all four into one? Granted with the video ipod the later two have been combined.

    And if imagination is in short supply, just look at the Moto Q phone which various folks have shown the ability to watch TV (and thus movies) over EV-DO before getting axed by Verizon.

    So in the end, Sprint (like any smart telecom) is merely being an early adopter and hedging that some folks would want entertainment on the go and on demand who are willing to pay for it.

    *Technically everything already prepaid.
