Washington goes wireless at state rest stops

That’s the latest news in the Pacific Northwest. My own backyard – highway rest stops – will offer free wifi access to road warriors.

Wireless Internet access is now available at 28 of the state’s 42 rest areas, including most of those in Western Washington. Travelers can log onto the state Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Web site, other travel sites and Washington tourism sites at no charge.

On a related note, I foresee rest stops being over populated with black Taurus’ and Camry’s as travelling business individuals make rest stops their new mobile home. Tax dollars hard at work right? Where is Google Municipal Wifi already?! We need more access points!

It’s about time! Every time I drive from Spokane to Seattle and back, I wish I could check my e-mail at the rest stops. Yeah, I’m that plugged in. Although, I don’t think I’m plugged in enough to bother to spend $2/$4 to actually do it.

Why the hell isn’t high speed internet access free yet?

…cos people can still make money off it. Why give something for free when you can charge people for it?

All I know is that if I have to pull over to a rest stop, that means a) I need to use the bathroom or b) I need to sleep. No motivation for me to get online.

True, but in public places, it seems like we could have free, ad-supported internet connections. That would be nice. Annoying, but better than nothing.

And when I stop at a rest stop, it’s usually because I (or the people I’m riding with) need to go to the bathroom or stretch a bit. Still, it would be nice to be able to check my e-mail real quick while I’m there. Sometimes plans change en-route…

WA is too late I guess. I am in Iowa and most of the highway rest stops here are Wi-fi enabled since 2003.

I would’ve liked this when I drove to California, sadly I would’ve needed them in Orgeon or Cali, not in Washington, I knew the road conditions here but it would’ve been nice to know where all the construction was in Cali

It’s an interesting idea but I doubt I’ll use it ever. I think they should give a free 10 minutes to browse wherever you want, so people could quickly check their webmail accounts without having to pay $2 for 20 minutes, even tie it to their drivers license number or something.
