The tasteless and appalling World Trade Center Coin

I’m sorry to get VERY political here, and I promise not to do it again for some time, but as a New Yorker this simply turns my stomach. Feel free to drop your own comments.

This is National Collectors Mint’s second try to market a coin based upon silver recovered from ground zero, after Attorney General Elliot Spitzer halted the sale of the first minting.

I suggest, you call the National Collectors Mint, and let them know how “in demmand” this coin is. The next post will be back to tech, I promise.

Well, I saw this on television and quite frankly… it’s pretty funny how stupid they are, but you must admit, at least it’s a new idea in coinage. A 3D coin! Not so much.

  • Roy

like all these stupid coins, this one is just coated ( “”clad”" ) with gold an silver. I’m sure it’s electro-plated which means there can be a near infinite supply of the limited edition coins… even if they just use some guys watch.

  • Dean

Didn’t you guys post this already, but when the Daily Show talked about it ?!

  • JM

Hey Thanks! Just bought 2! I’m told these things are going to be worth big money someday.

    j/k livin’

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

    Completely different coin.

  • http://www.alifelessordinary.com/ Thomas J. Brown

What really disgusts me is how excited they seem to be in the spot. “Commemorate the biggest tragedy on American soil in recent memory with this cheap, piece of shit coin!”

And who’s the jackass that designed this thing? If I worked for National Collectors Mint and they said, “We need you to design a 9/11 coin,” I’d tell them to get bent.

  • http://mellentine.com jaredmellentine

Whoa whoa… aren’t we forgetting that they’re contributing $5 to WTC families? That’s gotta pay for dishonoring the memories of their loved ones….

  • http://www.infowars.com Ian

I would never get such a coin representing a 5 year “anniversary” on an event at which our government did false flag attacks that killed 3000 Americans.

The idea people that came up with the idea that they would cash in on the american public’s suffering from these attacks from our own government makes me sick.

don’t let them do any more damage..learn the real story, go to http://www.seeloosechange.com and realize what they are doing, our own government is using terror, and the idea of terrorism to force us to give up our rights; every time bush announces some kind of new law, it’s in the wake of terrorism or 9/11, even if our own government didn’t do these attacks, they sure are cashing in on it, taking our freedoms constantly.

don’t take my word for it, do your own research.

  • http://www.myspace.com/AlexTheMartian Alex

I’m sorry, but from being on the other side of the country in Los Angeles I am not quite seeing what you guys are saying is so dishonoring.

Is it that they are showing a picture of the twin towers? is it about where the silver came from? Is it that people should not be reminded of 9/11

I think all these 9//11 movies coming out are bad and dishonoring, but what can be so bad about some coin?

I understand the coin idea seems kinda stupid, that whole 3d stand-up part of it, but what makes it turn your guys’ stomach?

  • http://rvgl.tonycai.com/blog/ j2

The fact that they’re boasting ‘oh hey guys this coin is made from the debris we found at ground zero, that means it’s worth more money’. Especially the fact that they try to appease the people who don’t like it by saying ‘fine we’ll give them five bucks’. It’s kinda very fail.

  • jimmy

    sick

  • annon

So what? they boast a battle ship is beign made form scrap metal from 911.
    Its metal, use it.
Do you know how much blood is on all the gold in circulation?

  • Roy

Okay Alex, how about this: someone stops by where you live, kills your family, kicks the dog, burns down your house, while you are at work… then someone else makes a commerative coin celibrating the day. How would you feel about the coin? How many would you buy?

  • Dragoonmac

Jeez, they are still at it.
As a fellow New Yorker (until 2001 at least) I feel the same way. These mint dudes are dicks.
But what freaks me out almost as much are the Loose Change Nutjobs.
(I guess you could kind of read this section as @Ian, but I doubt he will return, so its just me venting)
Christ, I swear these people have no lives and spend all day looking for anything that might reference 9/11 so they can say, “Yes, terrible, now watch this video and see how the Gov. did it.”
They called every departments number at the radio station I work for to remind us we should watch their video.
    http://www.911research.wtc7.net/reviews/loose_change/index.html
    http://www.ccdominoes.com/lc/LooseChangeGuide.html
those are factual inaccuracy guides to the video.
    http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=911_morons
and that is the best rebuttal ever.
    /rant
sorry about that, but seeing “OMGWTFBBQ?? Watch Loose Change!!!” on every website i visit is starting to piss me off

  • http://www.wtc7.net Ian

    /neo-con rant
you’re wrong about me not coming back…I check to see what people say about my statements, i’m not some kind of spammer either, I seriously believe that 9/11 was an inside job. and there’s more than just loose change, don’t listen to this neo-conservative fascist. Do your own research. lots of people don’t belive the official story; charlie sheen, the guy from UL that certified the steel used in the WTC towers, the cheif architect that built the WTC towers, even the guy that designed them.

Dragoonmac, I would be very interested to do a WHOIS on your IP…you’re probably some CIA or NSA worker. don’t be so brainwashed. almost every person i’ve seen with your prespective is controlled by the government, eg. NIST, and FOX.

    @Ian
I stand corrected about you coming back. I apologize for implying you were a spammer, It’s good to know you seriously believe what you are pushing. That doesn’t change the fact that others (the targets of my rant up there) do behave in said manner.
I’d also urge you not to listen to me if I was a neo-con fascist (I’d be very confusing when it comes to personal finances and a free market economy)
I appreciate the fact that there are a lot of people who distrust the gov. It’s a healthy American pastime. I watched Loose Change and I researched into it. Charlie Sheen can think whatever he likes. I don’t know about the Architect and Designer, but I do know the “guy from UL” has said he was taken out of context.
I don’t remember my home IP right off the bat (I also can’t check right now as I’m not at home), if you ask I’m sure Uneasy’s Staff could tell you, the number’s at the top left (It’s OK, I’m Natted and Firewalled). I wish I worked for the CIA or NSA, because trolling loose change forums would rank as “Cushiest Government Job Ever.” I wish I could say that, yes, I am brainwashed by FOX and NIST (I don’t know what that is by the way…) but I’m pretty sure my perspective is my own (with a slight liberal bias due to my working at NPR).
Some of yoiur links do raise some legitimate criticisms. 911truth, for example, has some great analysis of the footage from the pentagon. savetheinternet is’t even related to 9/11, its about this “series of tubes” we’re debating on.
I don’t advocate that anyone shirk doing their own research, but that goes both ways. If you don’t want to believe the government, Great! Look at the evidence, construct your own theory. But reciprically (sp?) be wary of anything presented to you as fact if it has an agenda, it’s easy to (intentionally or not) take a quote out of context, or not follow through. A healthy grain of salt, no?

  • Laurie

In response to Roy’s posting, I cannot see where selling a coin to keep the memory of the death of your family members in the spot light would hurt. I would much rather something good, ie the money go to a memorial or fund that will help people remember my family once lived and died due to a horrific death. As long as the money is going to a good cause, I will feel that my family did not die in vain. Yes, I would much rather have my family alive but what good is their death if no one remembers and tries to prevent another one. It is when people forget that murders are paroled to go back on the streets to kill again. I do feel that 100% of the profit should go to the families and memorial of the victims. Those that are purchasing the coins should not be viewed as greedy but rather as caring individuals who will do what is necessary to honor the memory of those who can no longer speak for themselves.

  • Roy

    @ Laurie

Yes I agree, a memorial would be very nice. The point here is that a memorial would be not for profit, non-transferable, owned by the government (which means we all own it) and could be used/visited by all, including those who couldn’t afford it. That would be appropriate.

These a-holes are making something which can’t be experienced by all, selling it for a profit, and treating like a calibration instead of a day of morning. That’s right they aren’t just covering their costs they are making a profit. At the very least I find this tacky. What’s next Hallmark releases happy 9/11 day cards?

Okay if this is acceptable where is the Auschwitz collectors plate series? Or the Kurd collector coin series? Or any other item celebrating mass murder.

If 100% of the profit goes to good things like you’re saying, is there a way to pad the accounting books so they are still making profit? Internally could they raise the hourly labor rate, which would artificially raise the cost of manufacturing, which would close the margin? Or how about this, I bought the vault of silver from ground zero for $1000, then sold it to my coin company for $500,000. My company ends up not making any profit, but I do. (Any creative accountants who can help me out here?)

  • Roy

    oops calibration s/b celebration

  • peter

Okay, I am a coin collector and have worked at my family’s coin store for years. These coins are made by a private company, not the United States mint. The coins do not have any real value do to the gold plating and minimal silver used. The claim that the silver is from the World Trade Center is true. At the bottom of the two towers where huge vaults of gold and silver (hundreds of ounces) which were owned by the banks and metal dealers. On November 1, 2001 workers at the destroyed World Trade Center Towers site located and began the recovery of gold, silver and platinum American Eagles that had been buried in a COMEX vault beneath the rubble since the tragic September 11th terrorist attacks. This is where the recovered silver and gold is from, but this coin only uses 15 mg, which is nothing. If you want an actual recovered coin you can buy a professionally graded silver eagle (1 ounce of silver) that was recovered from the world trade center.
