Juice is as bad as soda

A great read for those, who like me, believed that juice – as far as health was concerned – was far better than drinking a can of soda. Parents’ misconception that juice is far healthier than soda has been the leading cause of child obesity.

“Juice and soda essentially contain the same carbohydrates, so the body reacts to them the same way,” Lustig explains. “Juice contains fructose, glucose and sucrose, while soda contains high-fructose corn syrup, which is 55 percent fructose and 45 percent glucose.”

He adds that juice is actually worse than soda because juice has a higher energy density or more calories per ounce. While most sodas have 150 calories in a 12-ounce serving, juices have about 170 calories for the same amount.

Who else thought that juice was a healthier choice when picking up something to quench your thirst at the grocery store? Yet another lesson that water is probably the best choice on a hot summer day.

I agree, if you look at only the base values for the sugars, that fruit juice might be higher in sugar and carbohydrates than soda. However, if you look at more than just sugars, fruit juice would be far more nutritional than soda. As long as it is 100% juice, and not the sugar-water that is sold for juice most times. Juice fructose is also naturally formulated, and is far less processed and refined than the high-fructose corn syrup that soda uses.

Water is the best for thirst, but juice has its benefits and should still be chosen over soda.

  • John

now when i grab a Coke and look at the fruit drinks, I won’t feel so bad!

  • Jerry

How about the fact that juice tastes 10x better than soda? I tend to skip the malted battery acid for my OJ…

  • watta

    170 juice calories vs 150 soda calories…
    JUICE IS WORSE ?!

what is this guy been paid by the soda corporate?

that difference is insignificant, and his conclusions stupid and irresponsible.

First off high fructose corn syrup is pretty much the cause of most obesity not all obviously. but causes the body to think that it is still empty after eating or drinking, and so you continue to drink and eat which explains why people can finish off super gulps etc, this leads to the body having far to much sugar to deal with which can cause all sorts of problems ie storing alot of it as fat; hyperactivity and diabetes do some of your own research before you print such misleading facts.
Second concentrated, pasturised, even if it is 100% juice is just as acidic as soda.
So only drink fresh juice squeezed from a proper juicer which allows you to leave the pulp in or just eat the actual fruit.
So if you read the article, Lustig was half right about the juice and soda but also misleading as to what juices to drink and that high fructose sugars in some juices and practically all sodas are the real culprit for obesity something Lustig really should be aware of.

I love em both!…… I find this a bit hard to believe, but on the same note, “made from concentrate” surrounds us, so I can understand his statement about juice being equally as bad… realistically speaking what percentage or parents, or people even, do you think really fresh squeeze juice, or even look at the container to see if their juice is made from concentrate?… all most people consider is “it comes from fruit.. must be good”…

Realistically I’m willing to bet in the average americans diet, esspecially childrens, the type of juice they drink and the amount they drink is comparably as bad as soda.

  • watta

    hey “tocopherol”

please give a valid scientific source for this wonderful finding:

“high fructose corn syrup is pretty much the cause of most obesity ”

and i mean at least abstract in pubmed, not highfructose.is.evil.com

OJ is the leading cause of childhood obesity? How much is coke paying ? Soda is loaded with ‘empty calories’ or calories that bring no benefit wereas juices contain vitamins, minerals and dietery fiber.

Because of the high fiber nature of most juices it is almost impossible to get fat by drinking them. You’ll simply give yourself diarrhea.

This is a biased and harmful article. ABC should be ashamed.

As Ben (sort of) pointed out, many juices have fiber, which soda doesn’t. Yeah, juice has tons of sugar, but if there’s a bunch of fiber with it, then the higher calorie count is a bit misleading (in other words, buy OJ with pulp in).

Really, neither juice or soda are deal beverages. Neither is milk. Water is the best possible thing you can drink. To help make water a little less dull, I suggest sugar-free Kool-Aid made with Splenda to keep the calories at zero.

From a calorie-centric point of view, whenever I do drink soda (which is not often), I drink Diet Coke made with Splenda. It has zero calories and is pretty low in sodium for a soda.

BAH! I shall continue selecting premium juices over that coke and drink moderately. I suppose anything in excess will harm you, and yes that includes water.

Orange juice, although acidic in nature, actually becomes alkaline once it is digested by the body–much like many vegetables and unrefined sugars. This helps to keep our bodies pH-balanced so that we can absorb vitamins and minerals. Consuming a lot of cooked meat, beer and liquor, and artifical sugary drinks will cause acid-forming and lower pH levels. When pH levels sink too low our bodies lose the ability to absorb nutrients from food. I suggest to anyone who might believe this article to be true that they read up on pH levels of the body and acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods and types of sugar.

IMHO this Lustig guy’s argument holds absolutely no backing and he sounds like the typical bovine American who comes to conclusions based on taking nutritional facts at face value without researching the facts beneath. It’s easy to count calories and carbohydrates and compare numbers, but there’s a little thing called “science” that proved this dude’s argument to be incorrect years ago.

Soda = refined, artificial sugars. Drink enough of this and you’ll die of dehydration and/or end up with diabetes.
Juice = natural, simple sugars that break down easily to provide the body with energy. You’ll have to drink a lot more of this than soda before you experience health problems due to high sugar intake, and you probably won’t die of dehydration because simple sugars don’t rob the body of water like refined sugars do.

Keep paying azzclowns like this more money, Coke. Keep feeding America lies. The best position soda and candy companies can be in is to also manufacture and sell diet pills and insulin.

BTW: My last post was in reference to 100% juice, not from-concentrate or juice cocktail blends that are just as bad as soda.

    Thanks

Martinelli’s 100% apple juice has 140 calories and Dr. Pepper has 100 calories and Diet Dr. Pepper has 0 calories so i say apple juice is actually worse then soda.

One thing that you people have failed to mention/realize.. carbonated water is terrible for your teeth, kidneys and other . Next, just because a beverage has calories doesn’t mean that it is “bad” for you. Cory you are ignorant. oh my gosh apple juice has 140 calories and diet dr. pepper has 0 that means that diet dr.pepper is far healthier than apple juice. after all dr. pepper has an emmence amount of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber……. Oh wait it doesn’t. With an exception of a few of you, you people are all ignorant and moronic. Stop answering questions with information that you’ve just heard or read some random place like this posting. Stop drinking soda and I guarantee you will feel and look better. Soda is full of “empty calories.” Drink one serving of juice a day 8 oz., a couple of servings of milk 16 oz and water about 100 ounces. Water is vital to your metabolism. If you read this just know that I have masters in nutrition.
SODA IS TERRIBLE FOR YOU EVEN DIET!

  • natasha
