Cellphones cleared for takeoff?

The planes on RyanAir are about to get a bit nosier. The airline that likes to poke fun at flying, has begun a proposal to allow in flight cellular service. Subject to regulatory approval, Ryanair’s passengers traveling on 50 of the airline’s planes would be able to call, text and e-mail using their phones at rates that mirror international roaming charges.

The planes would deply the ‘OnAir’ system, a joint venture between Airbus and SITA

Hmmmmmm, so now on a plane I can not only hear screaming children, but screaming adults as they attempt to scream over the airplanes engines.

Do you think people should be allowed to use their cellphones on planes?

I’m split on the idea of allowing cellphones on planes. Airlines already offer inflight calls at a premium. I’m sure that the noise from cell phone users may very well be kept at a minimum thanks to the charges I imagine which will be incurred for connecting. Maybe airlines should adopt some sort of call-free times during a flight preventing passengers from becoming too stressed with annoying callers.

cell phone calls should only be allowed for trans-oceanic flights, where the flight times reach the double digit hour lengths. For a 2 hour trip from nyc to chicago, you can take a break from the office/signafante other/life

After my 10 hour flight back from germany sitting 2 rows from 3 seperate screaming children/loud, obnoxious adults, I seriously would much prefer if flights had a whisper rule, or at least a low talking rule. airplanes are the LAST place we need people yelling and making others uncomfortable

personally, i dont care if they let us use cell phones or not, i was just telling what i viewed as a more approtate way.
as long as im allowed to have my iPod im fine, cause i just pop that in, and disconect from the world.

it’s not like celphone, or ipod, usage is going to crash the plane. I’m sure that RyanAir has figured a way to turn this into a profit center… otherwise what’s the motivation?
Or said in a different way, when was the last time the airline industry did anything to improve our experence didn’t charge extra for it?

On NPR earlier, they played an interview with a guy from RyanAir. He said that if you don’t like the phone calls, just get on a better airline :) They definitely don’t have any delusions about their position on the food chain.
