You will take this IE7 and you will like it!

There was no doubt in my mind that Microsoft would strongly urge users to install IE7. Now that the IE7 blog has announced that Internet Explorer 7 will be distributed as a high priority update, the reality that IE7 will influence a large percentage of computer users into seeing the web through misaligned eyes.

As we get close to the final availability of Internet Explorer 7, I want to provide an update on our distribution plans. To help our customers become more secure and up-to-date, we will distribute IE7 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates (AU) shortly after the final version is released for Windows XP, planned for the fourth quarter of this year.

Here’s a dreamy thought. Why not ship Windows sans browser and allow users to install the application of their choice. I know it’s unrealistic. A default browser is almost required for an OS otherwise users will be left scratching their heads.

    I suppose most of them are guilty of that last bit. Linux has their Konquerer, and Mac have their….IE 5.2… but who the hell uses those anyway?

    Nevermind, it has come to my knowledge that Mac has eschewed IE 5.2 in favor of Safari…so that’s cool…

    Unfortunately, my work’s online employee thingy (including timesheet) doesn’t work in IE7. Or Firefox. It only works in IE6, and that’s a Bad Thingâ„¢.

    people in my office were beta testing IE7 …. a lot of stuff I have built, and a lot of stuff others have built failed to work properly… everything from AJAX to CSS… its gonna be a long year :(

    Same thing here…Ive been using the BETA on my development machine for awhile now and Im not impressed. There is really nothing in the release that Ive liked all that much, except for the novelty of the tabbed browsing view that shows mini-views of all your open tabs. Other than that its pretty boring, and some things (like the new bookmark navigation and toolbar design) are actually worse than IE6. I can already tell Im going to be troubleshooting JS errors for the next 18 months!

    Seriously. Looking at my own site which loads as it should in Safari, Firefox, and IE6… Why the hell is it off in IE7? Did MS invent some new hack requirement to get things to work as they should?

    I just wish there were something we could do educate people. I have a friend who works at the Mac Store (not to be confused with the Apple Store) in Seattle who says that, usually once or twice a day, he talks to someone who honestly believes that the only way to access the internet is to use IE.

    I suppose from a marketing standpoint, you have to give MS props for what they accomplished. Over 85% of the users of the site that I develop at work are IE users. I even know other web designers who know full well that IE is bollocks, but continue to use it anyway (why they do it baffles me).

    It’s kind of like the person who always gets what they want. Once they have it, they’re happy for a short while, but soon they don’t really care about it anymore. MS has done the same thing with IE. I mean, hell, how long has it been since v6 came out? It’s just been festering away for years. All of the “alternative browsers” are putting IE to shame and all MS can do is release what amounts to v6 with a facelift and tabs.

    Bah, I’m ranting again.

    I’ve been wondering for a long time …. why MS won’t fix all the w3c problems with IE6 via their automatic updates system. And instead they built IE7 which from my own beta exp. and above comments stated, still has a lot of things that need fixing.

    I was debating buying a domain something like

    and having a wiki like section that people could come in and report bugs and bad features, inconsistant javascript and CSS stuff… hopefulyl getting quite a collection of dirt on the browser and with a lot of wishful thinking make IE recall the damn release once the site starts to get attention and people start to realize how bad the browser is…

    of course its all wishful thinking and would never work (or would it) … but a boy can dream can’t he!

    Actually, I have no doubt it would be wildly popular… Among geeks and nerds. Real people would probably never see it.

    Then again, if the right geeks and nerds see it (such as the ones at MS), perhaps something could get done.

    You would just have to be careful to point out that the purpose is not to lambaste IE, but to show MS that enough people care about the product and actually want them to do something about it.

    About sites not working on IE7 or Firefox, but no problem with IE6:

    maybe the site is coded to not work on anything except IE, but that code does not recognize IE7 as being an IE. I dont know, it could be the problem.

    And why the hell is the addess bar on the very top, with the menu bar bellow it in IE7? and the addess bar being the only bar that has no way of being moved? I will have no problem with IE7 if it wasn’t for that.
