Windows 98 sent out to pasture

Today support for Windows 98 has finally ended. Microsoft will no longer help users over the phone with any problems they have with the ageing operating system.

Not only will phone support end, Microsoft will also stop providing security updates for Windows 98 from today as well. Originally support for the software was originally due to end in 2003, but was extended following customer protests or as I prefer to call it whining.

Of course Microsofts answer to the end of the support cycle is to upgrade to Windows XP as soon as possible, but I don’t know why they think you would upgrade now if you stuck it out this long. Special hello to all our readers who still use Windows 98, don’t worry we love you!

The thing which worries is the thought that after 8years Win 98 would still need security updates. How many problems can one OS have?

With time problems arrive, and within the same time, those problems got powerful… so it’s always needed to patch some things around… I just wonder why people still use that old os… and how can Microsoft recommend upgrade to Windows XP if Windows Vista is coming (coming… yeah, right) it’s like “buy Windows XP and use it for 8 years again while everyone else will use Windows Vista”

Mmmm Would you drive a Ford Anglia at 90mph on a motorway these days? It would be dangerous! Vista will have airbags….

However Win98 is cool for embedded PCs – it runs quick and runs VB/C++ Studio 6 programs very well on them. Great for machine control and still have network connectivity. Scoff? well our company has old Win98 licences from desktop PCs so they can be deployed to control machines….Recycle and reuse!

yeah, it’s not like you need 5 gigs of ram to run that ignorant XP. Word is Visa, wait , sorry, Vista will need 10 gigs

Microsoft = a licence to print money

For those who update: Just say no! I’m on Melenium Edition and have never touched it!
