Watch out Slingbox, Novac wants to use Skype to placeshift TV

I consider this an extremely innovative idea to further expand the idea of ‘place shifting’ TV. Take and already popular piece of software, Skype, and trick it to think a TV tuner box is really a webcam.

The [Novac TV Adaptor for Skype] connects the digitised video into a video-conferencing stream that can be sent via a local copy of Skype out to any other machine running the VoIP software. Sending a Skype instant message to the source lets you change channels.

Even though this little dongle is new, and very limited in compatibility (WinXP only). The idea behind the easy deployment is unmatched. I expect big things from this little gizmo which goes on sale July 14th.

There is absolutely no reason why this needs a dongle to operate, and while being a fairly interesting solution you could hack up something similar yourself over other protocols in a very short space of time.
