Visa, now accepted everywhere, even Monopoly

Wow, you can even ruin your pretend credit score! The funny thing is that the credit card version costs DOUBLE versus its paper money counterpart.

Game makers Parker have phased out the standard multi-coloured cash in a new version. Players will instead use a Visa mock debit card to keep track of how much they win or lose. It is part of an international deal between Parker and finance giant Visa, which designed the mock debit card and its electronic machine.

but how will you nide a debit card under the board ;-)

  • http://... Nic

    lol. exaclty! no more cheating!

  • biga

well, not EXACTLY, now you just have to have majic hands and use the other players card when paying bills.

  • Roger

Does Visa get to keep 3 percent of each transaction? So, let’s see, you took a walk on Boardwalk, where I have a hotel, that’ll be $1940 to me and $60 to Visa. Cheer up, when you pass Go, you’ll get $180.

  • Roger

Oops, did some math wrong there, no wonder there’s a computer included with the game.

  • Lisa

This takes some of the fun out of the game. I won’t be happy if it stays that way. :S
They should give people an option to use debit or not.

  • Rob

booooo. Paper money is more delicious.

  • Jerry

Without paper $ how do you build up the jackpot in the center for landing directly on “Go”?

  • http://blog.deadlycomputer.com steve

    i totally agree jerry!
thats one of the best parts of the game, going around and around and around for like a half hour, then finally landing on Free Parking, and collecting a few thousand dollars.

  • Jenny

The jackpot and free parking is not even in the rules of monopoly, though many people do play that way.

  • Dude

The Free Parking Jackpot is the lamest of the lame. No skill needed. Just dumb luck. Dumb like those who play that way.

  • vivid

My monopoly rulesheet has the jackpot rule.

  • padieg

And what is the next step? Online transactions? Nooo, I want to cheat a little, I am a cheater in this game, so don’t play with me cos I will cheat (well, unless this credit card thing catches on).

  • Ian

Playing with the free parking/jackpot rule lengthens the game. it’s not in the official rules. It’s considered a “house rule”.

  • http://n/a nomatter

‘house rules’, tho Parker Brothers may not take seriously, are a big deal the in the playability of a game. Adding ‘features’ to the game that limit consumer’s opportunities to modify the game only decreases its value to the consumer. I think it is safe to say allowing a game enough space to have ‘house rules’ not only allows the game to be playable forever, my parents still own their original Monopoly and change the rules every now and then to add a little twist, but encourages people to purchase a game because they know their are more possibilities to the game than just swiping a card.

Basically, this went from a game of opportunity and possibility to just ‘practice’ swiping for kids. It now requires the involvement of Candyland… which is great for a 6 year old, but stupid for an adult. Monopoly has been reduced to roll, move, swipe, wait, roll, move, swipe, wait, roll, move, swipe, wait… with the addition of the CC, it will be harder for people to get strategic and get involved.

Now that “house rules”, as nomatter says, are pretty much ignored by Parker Brothers in this deal with Visa I suspect that the old Monopoly boards will start to sell pretty well on eBay. “Just like when I was a kid”. America already has horrible credit, and the more deals like this that appear the more likely it’ll just get worse.

There is also something about watching someone land on your most valuable property and watch them count out each bill in agony.

  • Roger

I agree, Nathaniel. The joy of watching your fellow players go through hopeless, time-consuming counting and mortgaging, and maybe even try to negotiate better future terms on their holdings, is the whole fun of winning the game. It’s only topped by when someone gets so mad at side negotiations that they scream and refuse to finish the game.

  • Jim

It is a Debit card, not a credit card.

Also, AFAIK, you could just key in a bonus when you land on go, and they still sell the kind with paper money. This isn’t the end of the world here.

Let’s consider the implication of what children will learn (those who don’t play video games). Use a credit card, not cash. Build your debt. Visa just made the biggest marketing move in the companies existance. Now what are children learning when they turn 18 and go to college. Get a credit card, go into debt, file bankruptcy. No wonder the dollar has no value – nobody uses it because they can’t. Yeah this is a rant – sorry but also a consideration. I don’t have any credit cards. I do use a debit card (Visa – ironically) but I pay cash for everything else. Imagine how much debt there is and what the companies are making profit off of percentage rates. Visa – get’em while they’re young.

  • jm

where can i buy this game ?

  • RIG

This is outrageous….The rules clearly need to be redefined….people think you can play the game with debt….The way it should be played is once you run out of money you have to mortgage all your property until youre at $0 but unfortunately people think the game pertains to the current era where everyone is in debt….or in this persons eyes up to $2000 in debt before they lose….haha I STILL WON even with their supposedly debt help house rules.

  • Daniel Watkins

this sounds awesome cant wait to play… the game is more futurized… who cares about paper money… quit trying to find something to complain about.. its not like they arent going to keep selling the original monopoly game.. seriously.. come on…
