The mushroom clouds looked beautiful
After reading the introduction of the article, I felt somewhat saddened by the fact that these innocent families became indirect casualties of war without even knowing. Read the accounts of a small girl growing up in Russia, and her recollection and experience witnessing the mushroom clouds from nuclear testing near her own home.
As a small girl Maria Tokasheva would sit on the doorstep of her family’s home watching enraptured as mysterious mushroom-shaped clouds filled the sky.[...]
“I liked to be there,” said Mrs Tokasheva, 49, a mother of one. “I remember atomic mushrooms. My friends and I, we couldn’t understand how dangerous it was because we had seen this mushroom and then something like a rainbow. It was amazing for us.”
Soldiers and citizens turned guinea pigs for Soviet Union nuclear weapon testing during the Cold War.
Past experiences such as the one above make me question whether innocent citizen today could fall victim to such atrocities without even knowing. If you saw an unnatural occurrence in the distance, would you gaze in awe? Or, would paranoia set causing you to question your own safety and the well being of loved ones?
