NYC wants to raise the smoking age

New York City, this sites home town, is currently considering raising the minimum smoking age from 18 to 21. The chair of the City Council’s health committee, recently introduced a bill that would make it illegal for anyone younger than 21 to buy cigarettes.

New York as is, is a VERY smoker unfriendly state. You can’t smoke anywhere food or drinks are served. you can’t smoke in doorways or on city owned property. With the cost of a pack at $8, is this age increase even necessary? Do you think the city should dictate above what the national standard is? Or do you feel that smoking should be banned outright?

i smoke.. but new york should do peopel a favor and jsut ban the sales of all tabacco products… poor peopel are going to have a heart attack and die… and not cuz of the smokes.. cuz of the prices and restrictions

I’m not sure banning smoking outright is the right thing to do, even if it does do everyone a favor. Rather than banning smoking, keep it legal but dissuade people from persuing the nasty and unhealthy habit by keeping costs high.

I don’t get the point of changing the age kids can buy them. Half the time kids parents buy the cigarettes for them. They should change it from being able to buy them to being able to smoke them. And then actually enforce the law. Everyone 18+ should have some form of ID anyways so it shouldn’t that hard to implement….

I don’t get it what is the point of even smoking?

Whilst I was in New Zealand, I discovered that it has been smoke free in public places for around two years now, and they soon hope to completely outlaw the sale of any tobacco products.

The UK is soon following suit with the ban of smoking in public places (bars, etc), early next year, and I hope that in due course that we will also have the sale of tobacco outlawed.

Putting the prices up only make the tobacco companies and/or governments more money off of the sales. I definitely think outright banning is the way to go. Just force the tobacco companies out, rather than continuing to line their pockets.

IF the pub capital of the world can do it, the rest of the world should follow suit, three cheers for Washington making the move itself this last fall!!

    I think it’s a good move…

Non smokers are annoying. Smoking is something I enjoy. Why don’t we ban abortions. You people would fucking have heart attacks. Jackholes

  • trekkie

Abortions do not adversely affect the health of other people. Smoking via second hand smoke does.

Here in BC, Canada, we have banned smoking in all indoor public places. When I travel, I forget how disgusting trying to eat at a restaurant can be when they allow smokers in.

So what….IT’s been like that here in Utah forever and its a good thing. Now if only anyone would obey the other smoking laws./

They barely card if you’re 21 to drink in NYC, why would this be any different?

And anyways, why should Bloomberg ban smoking outright? The revenue in taxes is just too profitable!

I’m a non-smoker. I feel that the age should be kept where it is, though. Let the morons who smoke continue to do so. We’re only decreasing the population, which is a good thing. Besides, if they’re dumb enough to pay USD $5-8 to kill themselves, it helps the economy, too. :D

I’m not saying how you should live your life, but if you really want someone good to smoke, you might as well try smoking some of my bullets. It would be a lot less painful.

i’m not a smoker, but the smoking laws are one set of laws that i outright disagree with.
people should be free to smoke ciggretts if they want, sure they’re addicting, but so is alochol, and remember what happened when that was banned outright?
increasing the age to smoke is stupid and a waste of government time, (not that the government actually spends time on revelant issues anyway).

and, “Pardon me for being the materialistic weasel of this group, but” the amount of money the government makes off of taxes of ciggretts is huge, and by increasing the smoking age, wouldnt that mean less people buy them, and less tax money?….
