The current administration is having some problems keeping their secret programs secret.

It seems that in addition to the Carnivore email capturing system, as well as phone record capturing, as well as phone conversation recording both foreign and domestic, the the US government has also decided to muscle access to financial records from a huge international database. They used this database to check the banking records of thousands of Americans. Mind you this only impacts THOUSANDS of American not millions as in other programs.

Unlike other forms of searches, where investigators must obtain court permission to examine records, the Bush administration ran the program using the president’s broad economic emergency powers to subpoena millions of records from the international cooperative known as Swift. [...]

Officials described the Swift program as the biggest and most far-reaching of several secret efforts to trace terrorist financing, the Times reported. Much more limited agreements with other companies have provided access to ATM transactions, credit card purchases and Western Union wire payments

Now, don’t flame us saying we are being critical of THIS government. It is of my opinion that most governments employ many methods to watch, or capture communications of their respective citizens. It is the citizens right to proper security and protection of their data.
