urlDoctor fixes that custom domain itch

An interesting service which I forecast to be quite a hith for social network, or any service users seeking a custom URL for their pages.

The idea is simple and quickly summed up a the following. To use the MySpace example, the default URL for a profile is something along the lines of http://myspace.com/xxxx. Boring right? urlDoctor offers the option to turn that blase URL into something a little more personalized like: http://david.lovesbaseball.com.

Simply visit urlDoctor [via], locate the form on the left side. Enter your name which will act as the “subdomain”, enter your option (the “domain”), and finally enter the URL which you wish users to be redirected to (your MySpace, Flickr, etc).

Get em’ while they’re hot!

Why don’t you tell your readers to put that you referred them?

How exactly does this company make money? Owning that many domains must be at least somewhat pricey and none of them have individual sites hosted on them which the service makes a profit off by reselling subdomains.

    Basically, what’s the catch?

    Hey all:

Hi, my name is David and I started the urlDoctor about 6 months ago as a hobbie. (Check out http://www.urldoctor.com/AboutUs.html for a bit more info).

Anyhow, I first wanted to say thanks for making a post on UneasySilence.com, and second, I wanted to briefly respond to a few of Josh’s concerns.

In short, it is our intention to “make money” in the future by offering augmented services. For the time being, “Personalized Domains” will remain FREE … no spam, no pop-ups, no “cyber trash.” (The incremental cost is pretty much $0 since all we are really doing is domain forwarding and masking.)

The full potential / value will not be realized until we have built a network – or until a number of users have acquired their own “Personalized Domains.”

I feel that “Personalized Domains” have value in that it allows individuals to “freely” move about the web. For instance, when an individual who has a MySpace page decides to switch to a new social network, his or her friends will be routed to this new network without even realized what has happened (assuming this user has redirected his or her “Personalized Domain” to the new site.) Or if an individual gets tired of Photobucket and wants to give Flickr a shot, or visa versa, his or her friends will still be able to reach the newest page without an interuption. Type in a “Personalized Domain,” and it goes directly to the latest site.

Anyhow, if you have any special concerns, please send me an e-mail.

    “EmailDavid AT byu.net”

    THANX!!!

(Also, I’ve been slammed with requests today, so I’ll get everyone set up ASAP :)
