Say hello to Captain Copyright!

captian copyright

Thanks to Eric for pointing out this oh so informative comic strip on Creative Commons and general media “sharing”.

Sharing, copying and republishing is stealing… and stealing is evil.

Has content sharing gone too far? Where do you stand on the topic of Creative Commons, share-alike, or GNU licensing?

    Hahaha….
    “Lord Remixdoom, launch the missile!”
It may get me sued but thats one of the coolest sounding lines I’ve heard in months.

Seriously though. Creative Commons/GNU is a really good idea. It helps those of us w/o funding (read college) find all sorts of cool things. Music, Programs (I cant affor to pay $50 for a virus scanner on my PC, or $100 for an OS), even recipies. Its the same as having a friend who’s a musician/programmer, you’ve got the hookup.

I’m a little unclear on the intent of the comic. Funny as hell, but still unclear. Creative Commons is a completely adjustable copyright notice.

Is the comic to say that by subscribing to the GNU concept, you are in turn under-valuing your creativity, and therefore hurting all creative endeavors because without the blig, no one’s going to sing? Without getting cash for their work (and therefore having a value placed on it) no one will bother creating?

This is bollocks if you ask me. many of the best creations of all time have been done without direct profit in mind. Or if it was in mind, it was not achieved. Starving artists and all that cliche.

Best I remember stealing is when you take something without permission. The comic seems to say that if my buddy gives me permission to borrow his lawn mower, this is stealing. And in turn, it’s also hurt my chances of ever wanting to be a consumer again because I can now just borrow everything.

    Bah.

I personally use a CC-BY-SA license, and my 7000 Wikipedia edits are all GFDL.

I also like fair use :P
