Earth… not so bad after all

The Earth is now so dangerous that humans must find a new home if the species is to survive. That was Stephen Hawking’s message earlier this week. But where should we go? Alok Jha weighs up the options, from the mountains of Mars to the acid clouds of Venus

Very fun read of an article where Mr. Alok Jha (I think thats a mister) looks at earth alternatives for the human species to inhabit. He spans everything from floating tubes in space to the moons of Saturn listing both Pro’s and Con’s of each situation.

The Moon

Pros

· You can already plan where to put up your mansion; it’s possible to buy real estate there. Pick a decent spot now.

Cons

· People have been selling land on the moon since the 70s; one Cornwall-based company says it has sold more than £4m-worth. However, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs drew up the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, and that says no nation can claim ownership of any celestial body (including the moon) and that all nations must agree to their peaceful use. This might mean that your deeds to land on the moon will eventually prove worthless.

Dang! looks like that Lunar Palace slot I purchased will be going to waste… Oh well, atleast I still have that star I paid 3 easy payments of $24.99 named after of me.

Has anyone ever thought about living in space?… is that big ring from Halo really THAT far off?

according to all that 50′s sci-fi i used to read, we should be well on our way to living on mars, the moon and harvesting crops at the bottom of the ocean by now. i am pretty disappointed at our progress, especially way back in 1994 when we had personal computers that couldn’t divide by zero.

actually, i think hawking finally got around to watching matrix 1 and he liked that speech about us viruses moving on to devour yet another area…

i would like to think that we could fix our shit before needing to move on to cleaner spaces.
