Create a virtual CDR on your PC

A while ago, we raised the question if it was possible to create a virtual CD drive, that would help convert your DRM protected music to fair use WAV’s.

Ask, and you will find: This virtual CD software will help you rip your own CDs to hard disk or to network images, and to create a Virtual CD on your computer to access those images. It works like a real CD-ROM

It is a little pricey at $35, but I think after saving 100 CD’s the cost can be justified.

You can do this on a mac to easily remove iTunes DRM by using Roxio Toast.

Simply make the CD and then Toast allows you to do a virtual burn and mount the CD all without the CD media. Then just use iTunes to import the songs!

That’s how I do it… and the Toast App should be essential to any Mac user anyways…

so Toast allows for iTunes to burn to a virtual CD! Wow! Even more reason to buy an iBook!

I like audiograbber [www.audiograbber.com] it rips and normalizes directly to MP3 format providing you have correct encoder.

It’s freeware, and you can move the created MP3 files directly into your ipod.

I thought this was a good plan a few months ago as well. However, all it really does is save you from having to actually physically burn the CD before ripping it. For $35, I can buy a whole bunch of CDs.

No music service allows you to burn “rented” (subscription) music to CD anyway. You must purchase it first. That would be the gold mine for a program like this.
