The government proposes giving you money for gas

This US Senate is pushing for $100 Gas Rebate Checks for every American taxpayer would get. This check is to offset the pain of higher pump prices for gasoline, under an amendment Senate Republicans hope to bring to a vote Today.

$100 for every taxpayer? Is this smart, or just a way for the administration to catch some positive press?

$100 wont even make a dent. I drop $60 every week at the pump for one car!

people are going to complain at whatever amount they recieve.. they should just try lowering the price of gas, or tax on the gas. the indian reservations out here in western ny are about 20 cents cheaper per gallon.

reminds me of that futurama episode. Do what Fry did and buy 100 cups of coffee and save the day!

I also read that as part of this bill, they are going to try to open up the Alaskan Wildlife Reserve. I think this is just a ploy by the government to try to get the Wildlife Reserve opened up for drilling, and try to make the governement care about the people. I agree that $100 is nothing, as for most people this will be 1 tank of gas, maybe 2 for some people. If this wasnt an election year, then we wouldnt even be seeing things like this in the headlines.
Why didnt they do something last year after all of the hurricanes hit?

A one-time tax rebate would be a good thing, but it would be a much better thing to just lower the gas tax permanently. A $100 rebate might help out individual drivers like you and me, but remember that we aren’t the only ones who buy gas.

A local cable company, for instance, might fuel a fleet of 200 or more trucks a week. If you drop the gas tax by even just a few percent points, the cable company now has a ton of money freed up which they can use to hire more people, lower prices, give raises, invest in infrastructure (which in turn would produce more jobs and income for other companies), etc.

Think about trucking companies, plumbers, phone companies, anyone with a fleet of some kind.

Simple economics. Tax cut = more gooder.

Also remember that the government simply can’t “lower” the gas prices (except for taxes). If Bush and/or Congress had a big switch that said “lower raise”, don’t you think they would have flipped it by now? They are investigating if there’s some sort of price gouging by oil companies, but if there’s not, there’s nothing else you can do to control the price of oil. So you either suck it up and quit whining, or figure out a way to reduce your own demand.

Additionally, gas prices (adjusted for inflation) are not that bad (http://www.randomuseless.info/gasprice/gasprice.html).

Agreed tax cuts would be the bestest thing they could do.

I think oil companies should be able to drive the prices to whatever they want… the dynamic market forces would eventually correct the price hikes… or worse … make alternative fuel sources more economical.
