Review: The MicroBlast portable speaker dock
The Rundown:
MicroBlast, portable speaker dock for 2GB or 4GB iPod nano, is convenient and easy to use. Priced on XtremMac for $119.95. Powered by provided AC adapter or four AA batteries. On/off switch on the back of the product preserves battery life.
Details:
After closer examination, the product exterior seems more durable than on first impression. The thin, lightweight, curvilinear design mimics that of the iPod nano.
iPod nano clicks into the dock with a snug fit, without scratching either product. Inserting the iPod is easy, however, removing it is slightly scary because the only way to take the iPod out is by holding it very carefully by the rim of the display screen and giving it a nice tug.
Two speakers are positioned on either side of the dock. Plastic casing framing the aluminum speakers is interchangeable between black and white to match your
iPod. iPod charges while docked, so it’s a perfect way to charge your iPod while traveling or listening to music.
The clear protective cover, hinged to the base of the unit, safely protects your iPod and the speakers from damage while it’s closed, or serves as a stand when the unit is open. When used as a stand, the case provides a sturdy base and clicks into position so the
speakers are secure. Phillips-head screws attach the clear cover and can be removed if the plastic was to crack. Black or white frames are switched out by removing the same screws. AC power cord blocks casing maneuverability (swinging action) while plugged in,
but that’s only a minor drawback.
The sound quality of the MicroBlast speakers seems average to the untrained ear. It is ideal for an amateur listener who is not too particular about their sound performance. I appreciate the speakers for their ability to tune my music louder than I can on my laptop. Music can be comfortably heard and depicted from the next room at three quarters of the maximum volume setting. I do not recommend tuning the speakers past that setting if listening to them in the same room. Loud, unpleasant distortion is probable in most types of music at a higher setting. Features 3 Watts per channel at 4 ohms.
