Bio-engineered [Cloned] bladder transplant success

New Scientist is reporting that the first successful bio-engineered bladder transplant was conducted at Wake Forest University Medical School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

To create the new bladders, the researchers took a biopsy from patients whose bladders functioned poorly due to an inherited nervous system disorder. The team then placed muscle cells and cells from the bladder lining on a biodegradable bladder-shaped scaffold and allowed them to grow for about two months.

This practice is considered cloning is it not?

I too am hopeful about this bladder transplant. Because of severe Interstitial Cystitis, I had to have my bladder removed. Now, because of reasons no one seems to know, my skin around the stoma (peristomal) is always ulcered. I’ve had the stoma moved once already and am running out of options. The top layer of skin is completely gone and will not grow back.
I know that I may have reoccuring pain if I have the bladder transplant but at least I wouldn’t have raw, ulcerated skin.

I’m very encouraged by this news and truly hope that Dr. Atala gets the approval and funds needed for his wonderful research. The wonderful thing about this is that your own cells are being used to grow your new bladder. So there is no risk of your body rejecting it.
