Microsoft unveils the UMPC (Origami)

Not one to follow the hype behind Microsoft, the official release of the much debated Origami Ultra-Mobile PC today at CeBIT reveiled two flavors of the latest MS project by Samsung and ASUS. Features for the new devices include:

  • Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 OS
  • Approximately 7â€? diagonal display (or smaller)
  • Minimum 800 x 480 resolution
  • Approximately 2 pounds
  • Integrated touch panel

Read more about the little device on the official UMPC page [Microsoft], Yahoo, or Intels UMPC page.

I think Good Morning Silicon Valley has a great take on the etch-n-sketch looking device.

I heard that it will cost between 700 and 1000 dollars (minimum, and at the USA). Also read somewhere that even Bill Gates wanted something smaller and with a more affordable price, and that they will be working on this for the next versions. It’s expected to cost 500U$ in a year and with the launch of new versions.
Sounds like a good deal for me to reduce the gap between handhelds and laptops, and I wouldn’t doubt Apple will come with something similar to compete with MS. Maybe not soon, but Apple wouldn’t let MS all by itself on such business… Especially now that it has contacts with Intel, and these cute things do use some kind of Intel processors in it.
I have to admit: I’m no Microsoft fan, but for the first time ever they did something Apple has always done to me: make me have the feeling that I actually NEED the Origami, wich raises my will to buy it…. Now this is getting fun… So let the battle begin

Oh, bad point: Battery should only last about to 3 hours. So I’m not buying this untill Intel makes it’s dream come true: make these UMPC battery last at least 24 hours (it’s said that this will become a reality on upcoming generations… Untill then… I’m not buying it ^^)
