Google Redux [Face-lift]

That’s pretty sweet. I am not sure if we could see it to be offically google because they would have to expand that to all google, and they do a fairly good job using the whole page except the main page.

No, they are not to change the original google main page, they want it to be extremely compatible with all the browsers (even IE 3.0) so they can’t apply layers or CSS

google should invest in possibly implementing some sort of script for serving different front pages depending on the browser.

Man, I can’t even remember the last time I was at the main Google page. I mean, that’s why we have Google Search bars in our browsers now. So I’d pretty much only really be interested if there were a script or something that would change the look of the actual search result pages. But then, I don’t know how interested I’d really be, since the search result pages are actually pretty good the way they are.

That said, backwards compatibility doesn’t need to come at the expense of style. R032E5 seems to be under the impression that moving to a CSS-based layout would make it “incompatible” with older browsers. Aside from the fact that nobody uses those browsers anymore, except for maybe the 5 people who I’m sure will suddenly be drudged up as examples of “someone I know who still uses IE 3.0,” the site would still be just as viewable in earlier browsers. Sure, they may not look the same, but the simple fact of the matter is that it’s impossible to have a page look the same in EVERY browser, no matter what the die-hard tablists may think. CSS-based designs will, on the other hand, work in every browser all the way back to Mosaic. They may not look the same, but they will work.
