Because music sounds better outside of the garage

With South by Southwest 2006 (SXSW) [March 10 - 19] just around the corner, you know for sure that now more than ever is the time to open your ears to new independent artists. Curious to hear a few samples before hand? Check our prior post containing artists profiles and download.

If you’ve ever wondered what it might take to get your backyard band or newfound artistic talent noticed, or balked at the idea of creating a public profile, rest assured that the options are near endless. Gone are the days of relying on record labels or mainstream promotion machines to launch your personal career(s).

As Seattle based REDEFINE MAGAZINE puts it. “Fighting the independent fight” is no longer a solo fight. I know I’m not the only one anticipating new artists this weekend.

Recall the controversial Apple Computer Commercial which purportedly ripped the video from Seattle’s local band The Postal Service?

I dunno about calling the postal service a Seattle band. Ok 2 collaborators of 4 are from the Pacific Northwest. Jen Wood is from Seattle, Ben Gibbard is from Bellingham the remaining collborators Jimmy Tamborello is from Los Angeles and Jenny Lewis born in Vegas lives in Los Angeles now.

But the founding members are Ben and Jimmy neither one from Seattle proper. Technically speaking Bellingham is closer to Vancouver BC than Seattle by about 39 miles, granted different country but geographically speaking it’s the closest major city of reference.

Does being on Sub Pop make someone a Seattle band or has grunge’s Seattle reference drove all music that touches washington to become Seattle for the sake of geographically unknowing fans? But calling them a Los Angeles band would be more correct.

Ok, yeah this is a topic that I always love to discuss due to the period where a ton of bands moved to Seattle just to be called a “Seattle” band when they lived here for less than a year.

Is this comment completely useless and I’ve spent the time arguing with myself, yeah pretty much…
