Amazon S3 online file storage

Amazon S3 or Simple Storage Service is Amazon’s latest entry into the ever congestive web based file storage arena. Geared towards developers seeking reliability and scalability, S3 provides a simple storage solution which charges by the GB.

Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to developers.

Interesting web service by Amazon. Would you be more inclined to use a ‘free’ rendition by Google?

I don’t know anyone who’s filled up Box.net yet, and if you refer 5 dudes you get a free upgrade with Box.net . I’ve used about 2MB/5GB!

i haven’t used too much of my box.net account either. as useful as the drag and drop java applet is, i find it kind of annoying that after you upload a single file, you need to restart the module to drap additional files. it can’t just sit on your desktop somewhere allowing you to continue doing your work and dragging random files into the window.

Well, just wait until someone gets the API out there, so we can have a Dash Widget for it. Ive refered my 5 buddies to it for a free year of premium, and if i come close to filling it up, ill more than likely just make a new account, and refer 5 more.

I’ll wait for Google to offer it up. Honestly, I have very little to hide, they’re not going to be interested in how long I’ve worked where I work or my avatar.

I too am a little annoyed by how Box.net uploads files, I am making some use out of it though in the meantime. But I refuse to pay for something like this, especially with multi-billion dollar companies such as Amazon, they could afford to offer a free service.
