Google thinks the Greenwich Meridian is misplaced

greenwich meridian

I’m sure the error is no different from any other misplaced physical attribute displayed by Google Maps.

[...] according to the most reliable authority (The Greenwich Observatory press office – and if they don’t know, who does?), the line marking zero degrees longitude passes right through the observatory buildings and across the forecourt where there is a lovely sculpture on top of which happy tourists can pose, one foot in the east and one in the west.

Now what happens when educational institutions pull up data from Google Maps to use in class? Maybe Google should try and shift an entire city over 100 meters and see’s if anyone notices.

The Google map is not wrong. During my last guided tour of the Greenwich Observatory the guide actually indicated that if you use a GPS navigation tool it shows that the zero meridian is no more running threw the observatory itself. All that has todo with the fact that the entire grid has been recalculated using computers. Basically the data wass inaccurate and corrections were made having as a result that the zzero meridian no more runs threw the observatory.

Sorry for not being able to provide more scientiifc information, but I am not a scientist.

The good thing about this map is, that using it you can go stand in those bushes and still take a picture on the meridian.

    So, to people visiting Greenwich!
Print out this page and make sure that you will hike to to this remote location and take a picture next to the cows. j/k
