A ‘pod’ to rule them all

Rumors are buzzing that a new iPod will be coming soon. Even normal consumers are aware when a new iPod is just around the corner and boy do I get to hear them complain about it too. They claim that they just got an iPod in December and it’s too early to have a new one. The fact is, iPods are on 6-10 month product cycles like the nano that came out at the end of summer and the full size iPod released in mid October. So April – June is way overdue and I would not be surprised if we got iPods earlier than that.

I’m especially excited about the ultimate iPod. One with an entirely new user interfaces and touch sensitive controls. Daily, I have to tell friends to be easy on my click wheel because it will become indented if you push too hard. A 3.5 iPod face which is the screen will be incredible for wide angle high definition movies because watching the Dukes of Hazard on my iPod on the way to work was difficult from two feet away and I wished the screen was slightly larger.

I have used the nano and I don’t understand why album artwork is even included because the screen is so darn small album artwork looks like pixilated trash. The artwork on the original iPod photo was almost readable but that was pushing it. The nano is not going to revert to something less but it has its shortcomings including an interface that has remained unchanged since 2001. A new iPod with such a large screen could be used similar to a PSP with volume controls on the side, a magically appearing click wheel in the middle and the menus on the left and right side of the click wheel. The menu on the left showing what menu you are currently viewing and the right showing either now playing or a preview of the movie, photo or podcast you currently have selected. Selecting a movie takes you full screen and the click wheel disappears.
Having volume controls on the side would allow you to control volume without interrupting the viewing of your movie. The fact that this entire piece relies on heat means you could customize your experience to just audio or hybrid mode. Audio mode puts the click wheel always on at the bottom of the pod’s screen with classic vertical style navigation as we do on today’s iPod. Video style forces you to hold the iPod sideways as you navigate. Both will be popular amongst consumers but also give us choice because not everyone wants videos on the go.
My iPod 60Gb is full and I need more! Many music videos are 20Mbs a piece so if Apple wants me to continue buying these 12 track video CDs from artists like Coldplay and Jack Johnson, then an 80 and 100Gb flavor of iPod are in order and you can make the iPod longer and a little thicker but give me more storage. I hear every day from people that I don’t need more than 15 thousand songs at any given time and I agree but with only 100 hours of video at my fingertips, I think that’s a good gauge that I need more storage. I have 9 thousand songs and I’m content with that but only having a few hours of video hurts so get to work Apple.

So new iPods are coming but when are they not? April is expected timeframe and they will probably be in the 600-dollar range for 100Gb hard drives and 3.5 screens and you know where to find the first review.

I agree, no one needs a 100 GB iPod, though when you think about it, why not have all your music on you, you can play what you want, when you want, and have a back up in case something happens to your PC. It’s backup that isn’t just sitting there.

I think it’s really discouraging when Apple goes and releases new stuff like this, I just got a video iPod and while a new one as described above would be great, this would just kill my psyche. Sure, technology changes at a rapid pace, but even still, Apple, we’re not made of money (except for Dan and Adam, apparently, of UNEASYsilence.com fame. :)

No one needs 100 GB, you’re right. What we need is something like 250GB. ;)Yeah, give me two IPODs 250GB and i’ll be happy…
    2 IPODs 250GB with wireless to acess the rest I couldn’t fit in… ;)

You know that in ten years, people will probably die laughing with us talking about GB? BTW people of the future when you will read this in ten years time, leave a comment just here…

The ‘We dont need that amount of storage’ and ‘whats the point in video’ comments always come out with every new product, and if it were true, why wouldnt we be happy with the first gen pods? 10gb its laughable by todays standards. Iv been waiting since then for a useable pod with durability and uber features!

I like your design concept… I only hope Apple feels the same way. I reckon the iPods should be designed with removable storage, like memory slides, and you could label them to what songs you put on. E.g. Pop, Videos, Rock, etc. And when you want to play one of those, you just slide it into the side of your iPod and play. That way, there wouldn’t be such a big fuss about the size of your iPod and how much it can hold.

Then again… Apple is probably not doing this to keep people buying more iPods when they run out of space. They’re making the same mistake they did ages ago when Microsoft first came out. Convenience is everything, and the sooner Steve Jobs learns that, the sooner we can save and he can earn.

Wifi @ 11, 54 or 125 please, with a way to transfer vids and music files or the like, and MS word reader, touchscreen, bluetooth headphones, wireless charging, mini firefox, rss reader, dvb -t tv, video player with resizer (any res), good battery life, oh and the added bonus of it being a phone. Just a hought

Alex, you forgot with uneasysilence written on the back.
    Shame on you. ;)

I’d like to see 250mb too. As a producer of a video blog, I want to see the ipod storage get big quickly. I don’t know anyone who has watched my videos on an ipod, but the RSS feed exists … or do I have to upload it to the itunes store?

Thanks for all of your comments. i will be writing a followup entry on Friday to weigh out what the iPod could and could not have based on Price, technology and apple’s bottom line.

BTW I make 300 dollars a week as the “new guy” of an IT firm. My eveings are spent blogging and teaching Martial arts. I won’t discuss UE’s paycheck but I don’t buy anything but technology for myself. When yu drive a car that’s 15 years old and live for cheap then you can afford the newest devices.

I wish I had the ability afford iPods left and Right. If that was the case I would be running a faster comptuer than an 800Mhz iBook G4 12″ from November of 2003.

I hope they bring back aluminum like the mini. The plastic and metal backing scratch way too easy.

No No! No new iPods! That’s one of the reasons Apple gets on my nerves. You buy one thing, they come out with a new one next week. I’m surprised my little iPod Shuffle is still on the line. I bought it last year around this time. Haven’t you seen the Steve Jobs SNL skit? :)

hahah, i can’t stand the thought of an ipod with a bigger ipod. perhaps a dedicated video ipod would be fine with a large hdd and dvd drive, but as long as we remember ipods are mainly used for music and that a lot of the people that buy them could care less about album artwork and videos.

Personally, i’m fine with even 1 or 2 GB of music, because i’ll have 250-500mb playlists, usually about 3 that i’ll listen to regularly, and all i have to do is update the ipod when i’m done. 30GB is great for videos IMHO, because we i can fit all my scrubs on there (thanks to handbrake) and still have a fat amount of GBs for music, and i can show my friends my favourite tv show at their house without bringing damageable dvds.

My opinion is that iPods should be more about about music than anything else, but integrating video and such is great as well, as long as they dont get too gang-ho on the size of the ipod and lose all compact-ness involved.

perhaps, the next “video” ipod is going to not even be an iPod but a dedicated video player from apple. Steve has said enough times that it’s all about the music, so my thoughts on the next iPod being in the 600 dollar range is similar to w hat happened in 2004 when Apple kept the grayscale iPod and added two new players for 500 and 600 that had photo capabilities.

This may be what apple is going to do so it will still be all about the musioc but only in the sub $400 line

Whoever makes a Wireless Ipod video to scart adapter will be a rich man

  • http://mypersonalgetaway.com Adam Jackson

There are wireless audio adapters now for the iPod but they require batteres, have low quality, suck the iPod’s battery and are extremely heavy. Not to mention you’ll pay over 75 dollars for one.

That’s why I doubt Apple is ready ti integrate bluetooth into its iPod line.
