Google integrates Google Talk with Gmail

Thanks to Ryan who tipped me off to a new Gmail feature that will be rolling out into accounts across the board.

Gmail is integrating Google Talk directly into Gmail accounts. Bypass the short email announcements you usually send out to friend and family. Gmail users will now be able to view which contacts are online and allow instant messages to be sent and received directly from within your Gmail window. As an optional feature, open chat windows will popup like a normal chat client window allowing you to move the dialogue to whatever area of the screen you choose.

UPDATE: I just received the feature in my account. Sort of. I can see the chat logs label (with options to allow Google chat logging from within your account), but I have yet to see any quick contacts being listed.

    i have this feature, but none of my friends use google talk, i try to get them to use it, but they dont.
    oh well.

    i think the point of the feature it to have an option to instantly message contacts [who have gmail] that you normally message.

    Finally some great news! The new logo looks quite good, looks more modern =)
    And chatting while checking your email is just plain awesome. Very useful when you are on a public computer. I’m really looking forward to more great features like this one!

    lol, good observation Michael G.
    I think it will be a nice feature, but I have the same problem in that people just aren’t interested in GTalk… I think even I’d use it if the people I knew weren’t so afraid of moving away from Microshifty messenger! :(
