New minimal look for UNEASYsilence

UPDATE: Although the design was scheduled to last for months – we have come up with something new.

As a follow-up to the Upcoming face-lift for UNEASYsilence teaser, Dan and I are proud to announce a new minimal theme for for our UNEASY readers.

531 theme

Dan and I felt a change from the usual appearance of the site was in order. Over the span of a few days, I threw the above theme together – dubbed 531 or 5ThreeOne – specifically for UNEASYsilence. While the initial plan was to create a single “dark” layout [light text on a dark background], I realized that an alternative “lite” version [conventional dark text on light] would be necessary to cater to the to the personal preferences of our readers.

Current posts will precede previous posts, comments, categories, and archives towards the bottom. The option to toggle the appearance of the theme – which also refreshes the page – is located in the ‘Notes’ section. Your viewing preference is stored in a browser cookie which remembers your choice each time you visit.

Last but not least, we’ve added Gravatar support. Read our ‘Do you have a Gravatar yet?‘. Head on over to Gravatar.com and upload your own image. Remember that the email address you register is the address you should leave when commenting on this site (if you want your Gravatar to follow you).

As is the UNEASY way, the theme will be a revolving work in progress so feel free to leave thoughts / feedback.

UPDATE: It has come to our attention that sometimes the theme that you select may not be saved due to a bug in our caching plugin. This will be resolved shortly. Also we will be adding the old ‘bandwidth light’ theme (last revision) to the theme switcher for those who liked that.

UPDATE 2: We switched back to the old theme until we can get the theme switcher to work correctly.

UPDATE 3: Still tinkering behind the curtain. Three theme options will be made available for readers. Dark, light, and legacy.

    hey dan,

nice! i like the black one its kinda cool,

anyhow, I am going through a bit of a face-lift on mine too, i really look up to you guys!!!

    jimmy.

  • Dan

This by far is the best design we have… I keep switching from the white to the black.

  • Derek

hopefully these themes appeal to everyone. i would kill me to find unhappy readers.

  • http://www.cellantenna.com Jon from Ft Lauderdale

this looks real sharp. stands out compared to other blogs.

i am noticing with the black theme that i can only see the number of comments and not the actual word comments until i mouse over. is this normal?

anyways great work keep it up!

    Jon

  • Derek

yes. the ‘comments’ word is a hidden span which is visible on hover.

  • alexdcd

Very nice, good and simple. it now goes well with my alienware theme you should check them out for windows: http://www.alienware.com/intro_pages/invader.aspx

  • http://www.cellantenna.com Jon from Ft Lauderdale

wicked. this fits real nicely with my overall laptop theme.

now i just got to wait for my gravatar to be “rated”

  • Derek

nice. that alienware theme does look somewhat similar with the blue and black.

  • http://www.foldingpaper.info Jimmy Kim

very fresh, ah….. like kissing a new babys bottom. haha

  • alexdcd

Im just trying to get my avatatar working, changed address, any new about windows on the new macbook?

  • Dan

I’ll let you know when we get one…

  • http://www.anotherblog.com.ar Nicolás

Eh!!! really nice change. I prefer white, but black is nice too. :)
    Flickr’s colors? :P

  • Derek

i guess you could say flickr. i wasn’t even thinking of the flickr color scheme while i was putting this one together.

  • http://tagworld.com/jump4jay/ Jay

Looks awesome, as was expected. Great job!

  • Andrew

You guys went from the original, which I liked, to the new minimal, which I liked even more, to this, which I can’t stand.

I guess I’ll just read the RSS Feed.

  • Dan

Well Andrew, maybe we will add the other minimal to the switching.

  • Tim

My favorite was the previous one, the pink is a bit bright.

  • Kazaki

The one before this was definitely better.

This looks like one of those “pardon us while we redo the site” designs rather then the main-stay, minimal but informative one used previously.

  • Derek

well it sounds like we have mixed feelings. we’ll add a [as dan puts it] ‘legacy’ option in the footer to return to the standard two column blog layout.

  • Dan

I think it is really sharp, but we will add the legacy option is enough people want it.

  • http://blog.iamnotashamed.net Ariah Fine

    Great new look

  • truong

ehhh. i like the old one better. a little too black and typical

  • udi9

    great job!!!!

I love it (the black version) but i can’t switch to the white one, it just stays with the black…..

  • Derek

udi9 we’re dealing with a backend issue. as soon as the updates are made we’re going to get the theme switch in place for the white version as well as a legacy theme (previous two column).

  • alexdcd

Its a good theme, still waiting on the white version. if you dont like it youll only have to wait 6 years! Wheres the Uneasy Grin? Maybe you could add it to the colour changing block at the top? Just a thought

  • Derek

what have we dragged our feet about in the past?

i’ll reconsider adding the toy into a header loop.

  • http://tagworld.com/jump4jay/ Jay

Looks like you guys can’t please everyone. I wouldn’t worry too much, especially if you’re going to add the ‘legacy’ option. It’s unfortunate that people simply can’t even give kudos for the hard work and long hours whether they like it or not. One question though is why aren’t Dan’s comments in pink as well (or another colour) to distinguish easily? And one suggestion might be to put the ‘fresh posts and comments’ section above the comments… when there are a lot of comments like there are here, they start to get buried.

  • Derek

at current, the author comment color (pink) distinguishes the author of the post. if dan created a new post, any comments i leave would be blue. i’m going to rework the template to make both of our comments stand out.

  • http://fernyb.2ya.com fernyb

CHANGE IT BACK, its TOOOO black and the navigation is wierd.

  • Derek

ouch. some oppose change. the legacy theme option is at the top of the priority list now.

  • http://www.natemc.com Nate MC

So where do these gravatar things pop up at?

  • Derek

the new theme is temporarily down until we fix conflicting plugins. the gravatars will be displayed on the right side of each comment.

  • http://fernyb.2ya.com fernyb

perfect!! the old one is back. :-)

  • Jake

Old one is much better, IMO, so I’ll be using that. Would’ve been nice if you could at least update the old design to have the newer features (author comments in another color, gravitar options, etc.)

I appreciate the work you do, but as another poster put it, it looks to much like a “please wait while we get a new design” kinda design. Minimal is one thing, text on a background is another, even if it does have some fancy features to make it look cool.

Thanks for giving us the option to use the old one. It’ll keep me viewing. :)

  • Derek

the reason why the older theme was not and probably will not be updated is because it is the bandwidth light version which dan chose specifically for lighter loads.

i’m still curious as to what makes 531 seem like a temporary “while we’re creating something else sit tight with this theme”?

  • Jake

Again, this is just MY opinion, but there’s nothing to it, at all. There’s no real unique element about it. It’s bland. It just looks like a generic website. How many other ways can I say this?

It’s boring. It seems TOO simple, and even a little hard to navigate for a new user, with all the menu stuff being at the bottom. It just doesn’t seem like a good, perminant theme.

Why do I seem to be the most out-spoken user during every theme change? :P

  • Derek

i guess explaining my reasoning for placing everything at the bottom might help to alleviate any questions concerning the layout.

i felt that as a reader, the first interest are the freshest posts. for that reason, when visiting the main page, the five newest posts can be read in reverse chronological order.

if a reader is interested in seeing what else the site holds, they’ll find the options to navigate the rest of the site towards the bottom after reading through the latest posts.

if there is something a reader wishes to find immediately after opening the frontpage, the searchbar is should serve as a means of locating previous posts.

as far as the page appearing bland. everything is a personal preference which is what you respectfully pointed out.

feeback is always welcome. seeing as though this template was the first that i’ve attempted to write from scratch, i know that any future themes i make will be an improvement.

  • Dylan

Well, Im sure this is supposed to happen, but when I try to switch themes, it stays on the normal theme…

  • Dylan

nevermind, obsivouly I had to post a comment…

  • Dan

Yea… The theme switch is not OFFICIAL yet… we are working on the final touches

  • http://www.uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/01/5039/ .: UNEASYsilence :. » Blog Archive » Now with LEGACY support

[...] There was QUITE the scene over our new theme choice yesterday, so we have decided to make the legacy theme available for our readers to use. [...]

[...] I’ll keep this short considering the official announcement can / will be found on UNEASYsilence. I’ve finally reached the point where I can stand back and say that I am “finished” with the 5ThreeOne (One) WordPress theme. I know there are minor changes that I will make over the lifetime of the theme. Isn’t that how all design projects are? Perpetual works in progress? [...]

  • Mike

What notes section. aLL I see is a page that looks like the style sheet is missing.

  • http://www.cellantenna.com Jon from Ft Lauderdale

I am having a problem getting the dark black theme to stick. The one that was set as the new theme a few days ago when everyone was bitching. I actually liked that one LOL

  • Guy

Yah, i see you have the theme selector back up… still not working. Keep trying! love the site!

  • Derek

rest assured we are working on getting the site up and running at full steam.

  • Jake

As long as the content is better than the design, I’ll still hang around. (Oh, and btw, I showed the design to a friend, and he thought it was a site designed for viewing on a mobile phone. ;))

  • Dan

    Easy Jake…

  • Jake

Meh, I tell what I feel. I really appreciate the work you’ve all done on the site, and I’m glad the old design is still available to use, but just making it clear that I don’t particularly care for this design. And, you have to admit, it’s pretty narrow.. :\

But, again, I’ll still be at UES as long as the legacy template is still available.

  • Dan

Well, we were having HUGE problems with the legacy template, and it not available to all readers.

It WAS time for a new design, as all our long time readers know – We change templates to reflect our tastes. We offer a variety of ways to get to our site, including RSS feeds.

    A design is always evolving.

As always your opinion is welcome, and respected. And if the design isn’t to your taste we always would welcome your feedback to our email at tips@uneasysilence.com

  • Jake

Yes, and I’ve expressed my opinions on the other designs, too, and I will for the one after this. ;)

  • Raven

Site looks better on my psp…but not my Desktop.

  • http://maique.com/blog/ maique madeira

i’m getting the pink and blue theme and i like it..

it’s a nice job and i don’t miss the old one a lot.
i read uneasysilence mostrly by rss feed but find myself coming to the site more often than before.

    i like it.

  • Dan

We are working on a few little tweaks to the design, not that we don’t like it. As I stated, I am a HUGE fan of the design. But design always evolves.

  • http://www.uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/01/5111/ .: UNEASYsilence :. » Blog Archive » UNEASYsilence refreshed [again]

[...] It seems like only yesterday (seven days to be exact) that the frontpage received the UNEASY face-lift. The single column [531 One] theme received an equal share of rants and raves regarding the overall structure and presentation of information. Although the number of positive reviews outnumbered the negative, I was restless knowing that a select few screamed out for the old. For that reason, the notepad was cleared and I started out to to create a two column layout dubbed 531 Two. [...]
