Mac Mondays: To MacTel or not to MacTel

Last week on smashtheSILENCE, we argued over wether a users should jump onto the Intel bandwagon or should stay the course with the PowerPC and see how this whole thing works out.

    I don’t think the issue is going to be with the hardware. The only concern I have is that it’ll be a while for the software world to catch up. Photoshop in particular run painfully slow until whenever they get a universal binary out (I’m guessing late ’06 or early ’07)

    If there are people with specific sotware needs that don’t run very fast yet on the current Intel Macs, they should definitely wait until those programs are available in a native version.

    For general office and home use, the MacTels are ready for general consumption. Most home users will not even know what Rosetta is, and that they are using it to run their apps. That is a big plus.
    Most home software (iLife package, iWorks, internet programs) will run fine on the MacTels, so there are no issues.

    I am sure that most software companies will try to get their Universal Binary apps out ASAP. So there will be a large number of these apps appearing in the next few months. If you need to buy a Mac, and you are thinking about getting the iMac or the MacBook Pro, do it. They both seem like great computers and in many cases they already outperform the PPC based models.

    Somehow I think waiting till the release of the next laptop, plain MacBook probably, is the way to go. New hardware is always new and can’t be expected to work without glitches.
