iMac G5 vs. iMac Intel – Let the hounds out

The above video [hosted on YouTube] may be of interest for Apple enthusiasts and nay-sayers alike. Apple iMac G5 vs. iMac Intel boot comparison. I know the clip has been floating around the net. Nonetheless, the comparison – despite reported claims that the Intel machine was “broken” – may expand or crush egos depending on your side of the fence.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

do macs always start this slow?

My iBook G4 is soooo much faster than that.

maybe it was just bad luck for that iMac, or perhaps G5s are slow startups, but i always get about 30ish seconds at most booting.

my powerbook (12” 1.5ghz) also boots much faster than this imac…

  • Dan

The Intel indeed does boot faster, but I gather that is due to a highly optimized OS.

  • Jason

One of those Macs were out of the box. If you listen to what they are saying in the video… So that’s a little unfair. I have a PowerPC iMac at work that boots just as fast. Optimized OS my arse.

  • Justin

Mind that I don’t have sound (if it matters), but which is which?

  • Viper

Good question, I don’t know either lol

  • Derek

the imac intel is on the right (oops) left side.

  • Viper

    Doesn’t makes sense.
So the intel one takes longer to load?
Wasn’t it suposed to be 2x as faster as the G5?
    Something sounds fishy here…

  • Battin

hmm doesnt he say it is the left one that is the intel one?

  • Viper

I think so, because the left one has a much better and brighter screen.

  • alexdcd

the left one is the intel Imac. The one on the right uses a power pc core. You can tell by the different screen, they used a different screen with brighter Cold cathode tube in the newer intel macs. Clock and bus speeds are very slow for the power PC cores and are hard to make quality cores. At the manufacturing stage, they throw away broken dyes, mark the slow ones as say 1.0ghz and the fast ones at 1.3GHZ. Intel has a better manufacturing process with less waste and high volume production, so dont be surprised when you see a 3.2GHz or 4GHz processor. The Operating system has been compiled from existing X86 knowledge, so it is definitely going to be faster. As for the power pc imac, it must be having a bad day.

Got some background info for you:
In the video there are two iMacs with equal 512 MB RAM are booted at the same time. One is a 2.1 Ghz G5, one is a 2.0Ghz Intel Core Duo. The Intel is on the left, the G5 is on the right. Some users said that the G5 iMac might have a problem for booting so slowly but others say that it’s a normal “first time” boot. The Problem Could have been due to software or accumulation of spyware – Yes Mac people get it too!

my G4 boots up faster than that!
