How-To: Convert and crop WMV files for playback on iPod Video [Windows]

Hat tip to Justin for taking the time to create a step-by-step Wink video tutorial for converting and cropping WMV files for playback on the 5th Generation iPods. While most users who download WMV files are content converting the videos as-is, others may be interested in maximizing their iPod screen real estate by cropping the unnecessary black video frames.

  • iTunes 6 + Quicktimes PRO (or Videora)
  • STOIK Video Converter 2 – Download
  • Virtual Dub – Download

    nope. we’ve used wink for a number of tutorials including our previous itunes music store tutorials. wink is a great tool for windows users interested in creating presentations. search for wink on the site, you’ll find it referenced a number of times.

    fernyb, I would picture you just using iMovie or QTSync, which is a load easier :P

    BTW, the goal of this was to outsmart iTMS and prove you could do it for free and in better quality (H.264) than iTunes’s MPEG-4s. A biproduct of that was having fullscreen content on your ipod. Hey did you also know that you could download Music Video Cover Art with the iTMS script here too? ;)

    btw, just found out by someone that videora doesn’t work with this. It only captures sound. As a free alternative, use 3GP_Converter.

    bummer how ur re-encoding 3 times here – arent u spitting on the quality? nero recode can crop and goto mp4 in one cycle – but i guess fair enough you cant do baseline h264 in recode
