FeedLounge goes public [for a small fee of course]

The much anticipated ‘premium’ web based feed reader went public yesterday.

I’m still unsure if I can justify paying for a web based feed reader ($5/month or $49.95/year). Bloglines is a bit unreliable, SearchFox recently announced its closure, and desktop based clients are severly limiting. Multiple viewing options, AJAX, private feeds, tags, search, and flags? Certainly sounds appealing.

For my money the Sage extension for Firefox is the best. Read your feeds right in firefox. Disable “Render feeds in contents area” and you’re set… headlines down the left and you can click on the appealing ones.

How is Bloglines unreliable? I have it open all day long at work and I have no problems at all.

I find Bloglines just annoying to use because if you just have time for 5 stories you have to remark everything as new. Oh and if you accidently double click a feed you lost all feeds there. And the few times i have said give me stuff from the past 72 hours, forget it, it freezes FF.

from past experience bloglines repeatedly returns old posts from previous months marked as ‘new’.

I’ve found a decent balance with Bloglines. I used Newsgator in the past, and while I found it very reliable and stable, I found that Bloglines offers more control over my feeds and how I view them. The fact that Bloglines also offers a free mobile site is a big plus as well.

I keep hearing that Google Reader will get an update in the near future, but have yet to see anything. I hope it does, I like the way it works overall, but it’s pretty feature-lite for my tastes.

The only time I’ve seen it return old posts as “new” is when the post has changed at all. It can be annoying when it’s just someone fixing a typo or updating a link or something, but I generally like this feature.
