The Chappelle Theory

chappelle

This account of Dave Chappelle’s fall from grace has been pieced together by me, a retired public relations executive who wishes to remain anonymous. my contacts, many of whom were closely related to the individuals involved, enabled me to fairly accurately recount the events that took place. You can take this for what you wish, but it is the truth [...]

Intriguing read concerning one of the worlds most popular comedians. Taken down by the same powerful and influential individuals that helped him reach the top. Does Dave Chappelle’s humor create a bad image for African Americans?

Fuck that, Dave Chappelle is bringing peace beyond discrimination, using comedy. Saying that he can make fun of blacks, whites, asians, gays.. Everyone is funny, thats a step towards understanding. Which is a form of peace.

  • http://www.matthewrock.com Matt Morton

After reading this story, I don’t know that I believe in its credibility! Absolutely no citiations… there are many parts where the writer says “Witness reported seeing Chappelle …” What witnesses? How was this information derived? Hmmmm…

  • Derek

authentic or not, it’s well thought out and convincing.

  • http://www.dead-frog.com Todd Jackson

It’s viral marketing for sure. The people who built the site are the ones who originally pimped it on the web, posting info on their weblogs with notations like (paraphrasing) “This is crazy”. For DVDs or Season 3 maybe?

  • S

hey Patrick, although I love Chappelle and his comedy, I do not believe making fun of races brings about peace. If anything making fun of others further enhances their stereotypes creating a situation where people will make fun of others and those being made fun of will not take it lightly. I really don’t care though I’m just saying
-Todd this is definitely for Season 3, because as I read it I thought to myself “oh wow now I need to watch the next season” lol

  • srussian

The main issue with The Chappelle Theory is that it gives the impression that series are recorded days before broadcast, when in fact it’s MONTHS.

  • Elliot

Uh, I’m pretty sure that the the shows they’re recording while the ‘story’ progresses are one season ahead of the ones debuting (He’s on the set filming the 3rd season and the second season is debuting when the pressure really heats up).

As for authenticity, definitly suspect for variety of reasons, but I’m suprised with how quickly everyone wants to shut this kind of exploration down – Doesn’t anybody like the idea of a renegade vigilante Oprah building voodoo dolls and breaking and entering?

And is there something I didn’t hear about a season 3 dvd release? I’ve heard others advance the viral marketing theory but I was pretty sure that season was never going to see daylight.

Poor comedy central. Oh well, there’s always south park.

  • Lex

WOW! that is one creative piece. What would be funny is if in season three Chappelle did a sketch about Oprah Winfrey conspiring with Bill Cosby trying to end his career.
And that whole race thing, Dave makes fun of every race treating them no different from each other, that to me is the epitomy of equality.

  • EscapeArtist

Seriously, it’s hard to believe some of this stuff. Like Matt said, there were no citations, empty witness claims, and, if there were in fact witnesses, this would have gone public long ago because of some nobody wanting to be the one that cracked the case. Still though, it is pretty interesting, and I have to say that TV really needs someone like Dave Chappelle to freshen things up a bit. I’d rather have half of a Dave Chappelle than thirty Bill Cosbys. Or Ophrahs, for that matter; I’d like to shoot that woman myself.

  • Jay

come on. this is an obvious publicity stunt to put chappelle back into the cultural viewfinder. It is so completely outrageous that there’s no way it can be anything else. Think about it, the new season starts in january (if i’m not mistaken) and chappelle’s “people” had to get the word back out. Especially since no one’s talking about his upcoming movie directed by Michel Gondry, or really talking much about the new season. Remember, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

  • Dee

Interesting theory, but not at all credible

  • KK

Very interesting theory – but not possible at all. Lets look at some of the aspects of the story:
    1. Tampering with the Oprah show to only broadcast something to Chappelle only – not only is that a Federal offence, its also impossible. not to mention completely wacked to think that Oprah would say that in front of a studio audience
    2. Oprah, a multi-billionaire, in Chappelle’s house with 3 armed thugs – c’mon, lets be real
    3. Chappelle has got a shiteload of cash too, if he wanted to, he could and would have wreaked havoc on any of those people. Do you really think that Chappelle would leave home open to intruders? to allow Al Sharpton to have photos taken with his sleeping children on xmas night? COME ON!

Agree with almost everyone on this page when we say this is viral marketing at its best.

  • Billy

This would make a great movie! Sort of like the Chuck Barris story.

  • Bobby Joe

The anonymous author of the site: none other than Chappelle himself.

  • Ed

Whats funny is that african-american’s are the only ones that would take shutting this down as far as it has been. I say this being so myself. “Dark-Crusaders” Isn’t a crusader someone who wages a holy war? Wow, they say these are the best for our people? Ridiculus. And if its true we will surely hear about it other places soon enough. If its just a hoax, it doesn’t plainly state that anywhere, so couldn’t that be slander?

  • Paul

Viral marketing genius. The fact that this is a subject of discussion (turth or not) means it WORKED! Touche. Looking forward to the Chappelle Show 2006.

  • option

I highly doubt this is viral marketing, though it’s helping. the chappelle show is owned by comedy central which is owned by viacom. there’s no way a corporation would accuse all these powerful afican americans of bringing down a single person for pure marketing purpose, that is unless they all agreed to it, but honestly do you think they would? this doesn’t mean that i believe it’s true, it’s obviously fiction.

  • http://www.uneasysilence.com ballz

By far the greatest hoax in a long time …. im almost angry i wasted 7-10 min. of my life reading it …. however i do believe there is way more than wat the TIME magazine article said went down and the “theory” did make some reasonable points through all its silly grandeur … fortunately … comedy central is still releasing the finished episodes next Jan. so this chappelle theory is relatively moot.

  • davec

Whilst the majority of accusations on this website are obviously a load of crap it is very easy to believe that certain aspects of this account have taken place. Chappelle has said the show is ending because he didnt like where it was heading well dont you think he has been heavily influenced by someone into making this decision. I just wish hed grom some balls and put these pricks in their place. If they dont like what dave says in his shows then dont friggen watch it then!!!!

  • tommyt

First of all, the third season was never completed in its entirety (all ‘x’ amount of shows). Based on this, this theory is definitely sketchy. Yet, there is some ‘plausible’ explanation to his off behavior due to the ‘pressure getting to him.’ I was hoping a third season and a subsequent forth would ensue (prior to reading the theory) but I’ll settle for an incomplete third.

The theory does touch on some reasonable points. Yes, the show does denigrate the Black population. Was it funny as hell? Of course. Tasteless comedy? Sure, according to those who have a very conservative view on life and society. Thus, more the reason for those individuals mentioned to do what the author of this theory is claiming they they in fact did. Very interesting read, though far-fetched, particularly the part where Oprah was in Chappelle’s house threatening him to take him out.

**Did Oprah really say, after abruptly turning to the camera whilst interviewing Tom Cruise, whatever she said about how Dave should stop doing what he’s doing? We should ask Tom Cruise, but that dude’s pretty f’d up in the head as well. Damn celebs…

  • Tech Novice

Am i the only person who ran a “whois” query on chappelletheory.com? I even had to look up how to find the owner of a domain, but some how i managed it even in my ludite state ;)

So i went to http://weblinc.com/ and found that they are a web-development/e-commerce/internet strategy company. I don’t know, for me that seals the deal: it’s viral marketing. But *brilliant* viral marketing… I loved every minute of the time i spent reading the site.

  • http://sixelasauce.diaryland.com Alexis

it is real people…while it might not sound like something that would happen in real life…being a celebrity is not like real life at all. how else could they get chappelle to walk away from 50 mill? make him crazy! duh

  • chrisdodgen

WHy is nobody talking about the fact that there is a trailer there? http://www.chappelletheory.com/next

  • Eric Kotchi

Okay yea who cares if its rrue or not. Is anybody else but me psyched that they “say” they’re gonna make a movie for this so call conspiracy. Damn whoever’d doin this is gon get a lotta green I’ll say.

  • DaDizzel

If Oprah and Bill really wanted the show off the air that bad, they would have gave chapelle the 50 million. they are billionairs, just bill and oprah not including everyone else mentioned.

really think about it. Whould people of power like that really risk fucking up their name possibly doing some serious jail time.

  • Groy

If you think that this is fake click on this link: http://entertainment.tv.yahoo.com/entnews/eo/20050511/111586788000.html

and find out that the true NEWS makes the theory valid!!! Do your research. You can’t just say something is bullshit when the most unbelievable things Have been REAL!!!

  • Tech Novice
  • R.N. Brinklord

In this end, this whole thing will be a joke where we are all the punchlines. Well, not all of us. :-)

  • R.N. Brinklord

I actually wrote that before I read the disclaimer! :-D

  • thinkfirst

    Well…

First KK. You mentioned that tampering the Oprah show to send to just Chappelle is “impossible.” Consider this, when you’re having a problem with your cable box you have to call your cable company, and they perform diagnostics on your box. That means that the cable company DOES have isolated access to individual cable boxes, so that is certainly possible. And obviously, if Oprah were to film a separate segment where she threatens Chapelle, she would not do it in front of a studio audience, and it doesn’t even say that on the site, so come on…

Next, Tech Novice gives justice to his name. The fact that Weblinc is hosting the site does not mean that it is viral marketing. Weblinc is a company that creates websites and “e-solutions” for other companies like Calvin Klein, etc. So obviously someone who requires anonimity would not host the site themselves, they would use an e-solution host like Weblinc. And the disclaimer posted on the website obviously has to state that the information is not proven to be true, otherwise they can be sued for libel. It’s a legal run-around to ensure they can state what they need to without being censored. The key words to look at in the disclaimer are “not proven to be true.” Just because they are not proven to be true, does that make them untrue? You can’t prove to a blind person that the sky is blue.

The other comments don’t even need to be referenced by name. You claim there is lack of proof and no witnesses. What did you think the website was going to do, publish the names of witnesses for everyone to see? If there really is a group out to silence Chappelle, why would you publish the names of witnesses who could corroborate his story? Come on. And the very first page of the site clearly states that this information was roughly accumulated by a person outside of the events in question, and that the site is by no means definitive, which should have been your first clue that this kind of information was not going to be available for public review anyway.

  • Leslie

Did no one else see the Charley Murphy page at the end???? This was a publicity stunt for something he’s got coming out in the spring. You know how he tells stories. The basic story could be true, he and a writer on the chappelle show just embellished a bit.

  • http://tim_theimmortalyahoo.com Sully

Why do black people get so bent out of shape when they are the target of sketch comedy, I mean you can turn on BET almost anytime of the day and find stand up comedians making fun of white people all the time, you don’t see jerry Seinfeld and jim Carey setting fire to the Apollo.
    This is Crazy

  • justin wagner

    hey groy,
in that article on yahoo, it says he flew to africa out of newark,NJ.
on the theory it says he flew out of an airport in cincinnati, ohio. doesn’t that seem weird. Maybe he got layed over in new jersey

  • Freddy boy

It makes sense for big public stars to set up a plot to end a show that they believe is not right. All of these stars are advocates of the black community and they should be seen as possible people involved. There are no sources to site where they came from but this is not a book, magazine, research paper at that. People that are connected to a person very closely are also people that end a person career easily. Those people who know you most are your worst enemies. Let’s be real, I don’t think anyone would give up that amount money unless themselves or their family or friends lives were in jeopardy. Dave Chapelle living in a community that he does makes perfect sense for no one else to see anything suspicious. Rich people get away with some of the stupid shit ever to happen…magic johnson getting aids and now he doesn’t have it in his system anymore. Celebrities can get away with a lot of bs.

Everything done in the dark, will surely come to light. This story is not over.

  • Chuck

think about it. the guy was gonna be paid 50 mil to do the 3rd season. why would he just skip out on that and move to south africa? 2nd thing, the site isnt really promoted, if it was a publicity stunt, they would put it on access hollywood or some gay ass show like that. the story is pretty sketchy but i believe it because ppl like oprah and the others are easy to track because of their fame. thats all i have to say

  • Palmer

I hope to god for the conspirator’s sake that this isn’t true. If it is, I can’t forgive anyone that would still have respect for someone that does things like that to a person. If I saw evidence Al Sharpton in my kids room, he’d get curb stomped, plain and simple.

  • Palmer

p.s is it just my trailer link that takes me to some other site that has no way to view the trailer?

  • Recardo

The article was very entertaining to say the least. I am not going to say I believe it or not. We live in a society were the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The rich has access to things some folks could never imagine. With access to privately owned or interest in hotels, private jet, and a parade of other transporation measures, why couldn’t the meeting have taken place? But then again, why risky it? Who knows and who really gives two shits! Just bring back the Chappelle Show damn it!!!

  • http://alafleur.blogspot.com Andrew

IT IS CLEARLY A PRANK FROM ANTI-SOCIAL.COM. READ THE DISCLAIMER http://www.chappelletheory.com/disclaimer.html

    ! WE’VE ALL BEEN HAD!!!

  • Big D

Someone up there a little farther was talking about racial equality and how this is the epitimy of racial equality cause every race is being made fun of…yeah, you have a good point there, but look who’s the one making fun of them–an African American…everyone here knows damn well that a white person could never do that cuase people’d think he’s a racist…when every race has the right to make fun of all the other races…that’ll be equality

  • Lis

Okay, are you all seriously THAT gullible? That’s funny.

  • http://niudemocrats.com Ray

    wow, you guys are morons.
as soon as i saw no citations i left the page.

  • aphpa 06

It is a very funny theory, and entertaining. If you actually believe that this is true I feel sorry for you. Just another example of how we are all living in a fear-based society. The man was overwhelmed with success, no more, no less. He will be back – you’ll see.
I love you Dave Chapelle !

  • trucker

I think I saw Oprah in my house too – Im scared.

  • iknowcomedy

Good PR stunt. Or maybe some comic who worked with Chappelle is trying to promote his name? Watching that stupid trailer graphic at the end, I might be Charlie Murphy, who really thought he was going to “blow up” on Chappelle’s show. For someone to throw in Greer Barns & Neal Brennan’s name… LOL. You should really work on your career, dude. Or whole thing was maybe written by no other than Tony Woods! LOL that’d be funny. Anyway, thanks for wasting my time.

if you think anything else, your crrrrrazy.

chapelle rocks and i look forward to season 3, however I won’t be buying any tshirts.

  • BrAyLaDnWin

I am a strong believer of this “theory” I think that the Dark Crusaders is an actual group organized to defeat the wrong image that is deprived from the african-American race.I think that the Dark Crusaders are just a limb off a bigger tree. The Package w/ Malcom’s,and Tupac’s Pics saying the Chappelle is next is reasonable account in that the killers have never been found or even seeked it would take a powerful force to cover up such a high profile murder.

  • Joe Blowyourself

Jeez…that’s why we read disclaimers… here it is verbatim:

    Stating the obvious.
We’d like to thank the bulk of you for not thinking, it makes the satire and parody that much easier. We’ve been pretty proud of the results so far.

The lawyers have asked that the following disclaimer be placed on this site. It seems that whether they’re organized or not, there’s some fear that ‘they’ may look this way.

Absolutely none of the information on this site has been verified to be true and, if you haven’t been able to tell, it isn’t affiliated with any of the people or companies mentioned on this site. We, however, do truly love Bill Cosby, but, again the lawyers request that we tell you that doesn’t mean that he had anything to do with this.

Anti-Social.com – making the information super highway unsafe for idiots since 1997. Back with a vengeance, Spring 2006.
