Mass MySpace suicide imminent?

After toying with MySpace for the past few months, I’ve decided that a MySpace suicide is imminent. For being the million kajillion dollar networking service that has attracted users from across the world, it’s disappointing to see no new features added to the MySpace preferences pane. The commenting system, messages, and interface are archaic at best.

tagworld.png

I’ve recently stumbled upon Tagworld which is the reason for this very post. Tagworld embodies all of the latest trends of the social Web 2.0 including:

  • Photosharing
  • Bookmarks sharing
  • AJAX (drag n’ drop modules for adding content)
  • Tags (tag your images, people, bookmarks, content, etc.)
  • Integrated Google Maps
  • Integrated media players (share songs and playlists)
  • Blogging
  • File Storage

Background information on Tagworld:

Krueger, chief executive of the company says that while there are many discrete services out there, (such as Flickr and Blogger) it is difficult for those non-techies to cobble together a perfect personal page. In other words, they took everything that’s hot, and put it into a blender, and came up with a mass-market offering. Will this “remix be too much for the mass market, especially when compared to folksy simplicity of MySpace? #

I’ve obviously left out a few important features as I’ve spent the last few minutes quickly perusing the options. Individuals hoping to utilize HTML / CSS will admire Tagworlds decision for greater design flexibility. For those weary of following a few links to quickly study either topics, Tagworld conveniently offers six preconfigured layout options. Again, drag n’ drop module flexibility provides users with the option to adjust what content goes where on pages.

Try It

Anything that kills off even part of MySpace is good in my book.

  • Dylan

Derek, is that your own stylesheet?

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

it’s more than just a stylesheet. i opted to use the html module to add divs.

  • Jake

Ugh, I hate MySpace, but everyone at my school think it’s the best thing since sliced bread..

  • Dylan

Same here, Ive tried to convince them to switch to TagWorld, but, they still refuse…strange…

  • Dylan

I know you probably dont want to hear this, but, could you write a tutorial?

  • http://www.bombast.org/ William

The load time for the site is agonizingly slow though.

I think the main reasons people are reluctant to switch are:

    1. They haven’t experienced any better.
    2. They’re so used to MySpace.
    3. Along the lines of #2, MySpace has the established community. Unless everyone moves at the same time to TagWorld, TagWorld will not be successful.

My goodness! I was going to log in to see how the styling works in TagWorld (to answer Dylan’s question), but after typing part of the comment, it’s still loading.

    Forget it.

P.S. “TagWorld” really is a misnomer isn’t it?

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

dylan.. i found out that the content modules are going to have an open api which will allow for more flexibility.

i’ll contemplate a tutorial as soon as the servers adjust to the heavy hits (explains the slow site load). when i registered everything was snappy. in one day alone i’ve seen the membership number jump 25,000.

will. i agree that tagworld is overly technical for the current myspace crowd. they’ll adjust though. i think the 1gb of file storage / music hosting will pull some attention. unfortunately, i’ve already managed to stumble upon pages that look worse than those i’ve seen on myspace. i don’t know how people do it. tags.. eh. i’m not too confident they’ll be used appropriately. at least not in the sense that you or i currently use them.

    William,
just as a reminder, TagWorld is a little more than one month old in terms of launching it products. For as new as they are, they are leapfrogging many companies’ functionality that hasn’t changed or improved in years. Per your comment on the slow loading, the fact is TagWorld rolled out their music service today and are ironing out a few expected wrinkles. I hope you can cut them some slack than to expect flawless performance.

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

i have to agree with carmen. what social networking service has offered such a rich feature set within the first month of its launch?

  • http://uberamusing.blogspot.com Jay~

I joined TagWorld on the 11th of December (soon after seeing this post) and the number of people has increased by over 100 000! Not bad in approx 20 days. It’s still slow at times, but it’s Beta and they’re getting thousands of new users everyday. Give it time and it’ll be great.

  • Steve

They don’t support Linux and the Open source movement. Rather helping software giant Microsoft by adopting it’s “.net” strategy.

I always thought that social networking and community is in a “community” spirit and supports the free exchange of thoughts and ideas. I don’t see how supporting private companies rather than Linux, Apache, MySql, etc. is helping the community.

Maybe if the company shows more community spirit it might wow users away from MySpace, but I somehow doubt it.

They completely failed to understand what MySpace is all about and why it’s successful.

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

if you mention the terms .net, linux, apache, mysql, etc to myspace users, i can almost guarantee that 98% of the users will look at you with the same befuddled look as though they were standing in line at mcdonalds unable to decide between nuggets or a chicken burger.

I prbly don’t have any room for saying this… But a lot of us really don’t understand computer lingo… That’s why you will find inappropriate use of tags, ppl use them for what they want not what they may or may not have been created for. (or like me just don’t understand what they are meant for). Ppl who understand programs such as Linux, MySql, etc. are heroes in my eyes because I have a hard enough time navigating through a site just to get a background (from html) up. SO I thank the ppl who DO understand and can utilize the programs at the programs utmost capabilities.

Sorry to say, but I see alot of intellectual speak here ^^^ (in above comments) but you tend to forget that many of the folks using these programs are Jo/Jane Schmo’s and would never comprehend the meaning of “html” (me being one of them). It’s not that I love being ignorant of such knowledge… I would be more than happy to have half the knowledge you seem to have. Please take into account what “audience” out in the community these companies are targeting… if we all could create our own websites using the programs, there would be no use for Xanga, MySpace, or TagWorld.

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

i understand that a majority of the users who make use of these communities are not as familiar with html / css. for that reason, you can find that my personal write-ups do take all this into consideration.

if there are any specific questions you may have, feel free to drop them here in the comments or in our inbox.

I have to interject the fact that I caught all these blogs/sites very late…my hs never did anything like that.. so in college I got up to speed too late. I initally thought MySpace very crude compared to xanga or Tagworld…but then I found that for a computer illiterate person MySpace is very convenient. I don’t have to know anything about .wav files or .mp3 (which is the only way to get music on the site and I just learned how to convert mine so I can get it on there, all very frustrating).

I think it is NICE .. yes N – I – C – E that there is a site out there that does not highlight out illiterate I am. It shows COMPASSION. Something that seems to be LACKING in the moment of laughing at the “suicide” of any site. I don’t talk down about ppl who don’t understand kinesiology, no I’m not going to explain it….look it up in that “ARCHAIC” thing called a dictionary…oh wait you can just go on the web.

I don’t intend this to be any “hate” comment. I was just a lil offended. Humility is dead in this world … don’t kill off compassion on those less fortunate (or more ignorant) than you MR. Computer-Savvy-World-Critique…

Tagworld is nice but it seems like a place where only the cyber space moguls can congregate and fling their lingo and what not…myspace breaks that barrier, easy enough for those who don’t even care about .wav files to atleast be able to still connect with you high-horsed ever knowledgable computer GEEKS.

Thanks for your time. Try a lil splash 0′color …

It pains me to see readers taking posts literally. Maybe I should have titled this one MySpace soon to be dethroned or MySpace has met its match?

Hey A Girl, you should know that the MySpace you speak of, the one that you claim to be an easier service for less computer savvy users is wrong. TagWorld does everything MySpace does, but on a more web friendly level. If you think drag and drop content modules, add music to profiles with a single click, or prebuilt themes (one of which I was contracted to create) creates a challenging atmosphere from which to network from, I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe a future social network will allow users with a means in which to draw out profiles with crayola pens and pencils for uploading would better suit your style?

Since you’ve stated that you’ve been out of the loop as far as blogs and social networks are concerned, maybe you failed to notice some of the recent (as in couple months) censorship that MySpace has flexed on its user based? Code stripping, YouTube censoring, etc. Last I checked, TagWorld not only promotes sharing of everything, but accepts content from sites and services around the net. At this very moment, TagWorld is accepting work from public developers submitting widgets that users can insert on their own blogs and profiles… even widgets to stick on your MySpace.

Last time I logged into TagWorld, I’m pretty damn sure the glittery, scrolling marquee, eyesore pages on MySpace are now finding their way on to TagWorld pages. I guess we can say your claim of me being a Mr. Computer savvy world critique and TagWorld being a haven for “cyber space moguls” is ill-researched.

I very rarely go off with comments like these but it’s irritating to read comments such as yours. Do your own research before attacking an author and post. Better yet, dig through the archives and recognize that anything published on these pages is first and foremost to inform.

…and I don’t need a splash of color. What I need is a little more patience to deal with comments such as yours.

I’ve just started looking into myspace and will give it a try but I’m not impressed by what I have seen so far.
