Yahoo! Maps one-ups Google

Michael Arrington has the scoop on the latest completely Flash based local maps offering from Yahoo! Maps.


Unlike Google and Microsoft maps, Yahoo has chosen to use Flash over AJAX in building its new service, and they’ve added new features that are not found anywhere else. They’ve also done some things to reduce the hassle of creating, sharing and printing maps online.

Reading is so over-rated. Just point your browser to Yahoo! Maps and give it a spin. No page refreshes and your usual Flash effects. The service is beta so performance has some areas for improvement. I noticed a longer than acceptable load time – based on my standards – but that could be attributed to Flock. Google? Hello? Where’s your answer?

    hitsuji: It’s beta. We can’t expect a worldwide roll-out. Look how long it took Google to open it’s maps database up for the rest of the world. And I imagine Google is a little more keen to acknowledging international users.

    It’s just road maps, right? Until we get satellite images and hybrid view, it’s not worth it to me.

    Okay, right, it’s beta. But there’s still one bit of information that Google Local has that Yahoo’s new maps don’t; identification of one-way streets. Especially here in Seattle, where we apparently live and die by the one-way street. Satellite images and hybrid view would be nice, too.

    Mike: Yahoo does offer the API for developers to toy around with. Look for a awesome posted tomorrow which utilizes the latest Flash Yahoo maps.

    Ian: True. Google has the upper hand when it comes to properly labeling one way streets. Hell, I’ve lived here all my life and have gone up one way streets in the opposite direction. I may not have been completely myself… But yes, Seattle is like Portland. Too many damn one way streets.
