I’m not sure where I stand on the whole cellphone / MP3 convergence device. Share your own thoughts in the comments. I know for damn sure that Motorola’s first ROKR handset was a pathetic attempt. Seriously. Plain candybar design with iTunes. Wow. Catch me before I faint.

At least Motorola smartened up and and decided to turn its most popular handset into a iTunes powered MP3 player. Let’s see if the 100 song limit is lifted.

    I don’t think it’s too bad an idea (as long as the 100 song limit is lifted), but I’ll always use an iPod, so I’ll never have a need for a MP3/Cellphone hybrid.

    i use my iPod for listening to music and i dont use cellphone yet. i think i’ll wait for the real iPhone

    According to the local cingular store rep )accuracy of source is thus suspect, but info seems logical) the 100 song limit is really not a limit of any firmware, but a limit of the memory chip in the handest itself, which you can buy larger ones to replace (none larger on shelf today, only same size) but as a couple months pass(by Christmas) there should be some larger capacity chips on the accessory shelf.

    The onlyu reason I inquired concerning the 100 track limit was the following:

    This chip will hold up to 100 tracks but the number of songs it holds isn’t dependant strictly on the size of the chip (though it obviously can’t contain more than 512MB of data). Rather, the 100 track limitation is part of a DRM scheme that prevents the phone from playing more than 100 tracks.

    Having a limit in place make sense. Allowing ROKR users to load their handsets with as many songs as their memory chips will allow would take away from potential iPod customers.
