How-To: Downloading Yahoo! Music Videos with Firefox & VLC

Update 12/29: For a streamlined method of retrieving the required MMS:// URi, check our latest tutorial: How-To: Download music videos from Yahoo with LyFOX & VLC.

Update 10/17: Do something with your new WMV video collection. Convert the videos and import them into iTunes: How-To: Convert WMV to MOV for playback in iTunes [Windows].

Hat tip to Adam for helping throw this updated tutorial together for downloading Yahoo! Music Videos. I know a few readers were waiting patiently for updates to our How-To: Download Music Videos from Yahoo Launch with VLC, How-To: Download Music Videos from Yahoo Launch with Flashget, and How-To: Download 700K music video streams from Yahoo. As a forewarning, the first run through will be a bit tedious.

If you don’t have Firefox and the very useful GreaseMonkey Firefox extension installed on your system, you will not be able to complete this tutorial.

Step 1: Install the PKLaunch userscript. There are two versions. On for both OSX and Windows users. Windows users right-click here and select “Install user script”. OSX users do the same here.

Step 2: Sign in with your Yahoo account on Yahoo! Launch. Select the music video of your choice. PKLaunch will force the music video to open a new window for video playback. Make note of the drop down menu which offers different video bandwidth options. If you recall our previous tutorials, the 700K streams are higher quality videos usually reserved for SBC Yahoo! customers.

Step 3: The next step requires that you open an “info” window on the currently playing video. OSX users press ‘CMD + I’ and Windows users select ‘Tools > Page Info’ from the toolbar menu.

In the ‘Information’ window select the ‘Media’ tab. With the stream address highlighted, select the ‘Save As..’ button at the bottom of the window. When prompted with the ‘Save As..’ window, change the “medialog.ASP” filename to “medialog.TXT”.

Step 4: Open the “medialog.TXT” file in the plain text editor of your choice. Highlight the entire .ASX address and save it to your clipboard (Windows: CTRL + C; OSX: CMD + C).

Step 5: Open VLC. Go to ‘File > Open Network Stream’. Paste the previously copied .ASX address into the ‘HTTP / FTP / MMS / RTSP’ field. Make sure that the ‘Advanced / Stream output’ box at the bottom of the window is unchecked.

Step 6: This next step will differ depending on your OS. With the stream playing in VLC:

Windows users: Select ‘View > Playlist’. In the ‘Playlist’ window expand the entries until you locate a time block. It will look something like -(0:04:01). Right-click on the item and select ‘Info’. The URi field will contain the coveted MMS:// URi.

OSX users: While the stream is playing, hit CMD + I. The MMS:// address is in the URi field. Copy the address and close the window.

Step 7: Return to the main VLC window. Go to ‘File > Open Network Stream’. Paste the MMS:// URi into the ‘HTTP / FTP / MMS / RTSP’ field. Make sure that ‘Advanced / Stream Output’ is checked and select the ‘Settings’ button. In the ‘Settings’ box select the ‘File’ radio button. Specify the save path and title the video filename.WMV. Lastly, check the ‘Dump Raw Output’ box and click ‘OK’ through the settings windows. VLC will download the video to your specified directory.

If you find step by step text tutorials challenging to follow, check out the Flash video here (Windows users).

This might just be me but I think after step 2 once you have got the video playing and have got the link by goin to Properties it is easier to download it using something like Net Transport.
I’m not saying VLC is not a good player but its just easier the other way.

  • Dylan

Is there a way to download them as mp4 or mov files? Or a way to play them in iTunes?

  • Adam

Are you on a Mac or PC Dylan?

  • George

Hey, I was able to get this trick to work but my only problem is that I can’t get any videos greater than 390×368 and I can’t exactly figure out why. Any help?

  • Adam

They don’t come any bigger than that.

  • Joe Anderson

    I can’t be bothered :D

  • Dylan

    I am using a PC.

  • Adam

Then I don’t think you can Dylan. If you were on a Mac, you could get em to play in iTunes as WMV’s, but I don’t know of any way to do that. Seems your only coice is to download em as WMV’s and then convert em to MPG/MOV with another app.

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek Punsalan

We’ll see about creating a short tutorial for Windows users to convert WMV with ergh umm “free” alternatives. Stay tuned.

  • Steve

    Yeah… IT is a big confusing…

  • Jon

If you want to turn them into .MOV files just download Quicktime 7 pro. Open the file and export them using the “to iPod” selection and put it on your desktop, then you can open the file in itunes.

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Jon: You spoiled the fun. That was our tutorial for tomorrow.

  • Dylan

Ok, figured, but you said “ergh umm “freeâ€Â? alternatives”. Im not mad, I knew to do that, I had ergh “Bought” Quicktime 6, but alas, it didnt work. Well, let’s hope you do find some “ergh umm “freeâ€Â? alternatives”

  • Dylan

But I can’t even get a WMV to open in quicktime…

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Dylan: You can’t open WMV in Quicktime. You need to convert it to AVI or MOV first. Tomorrow’s tut uses Quicktime 7 PRO and Video Cleaner Pro. If you all want to follow along, start looking for ergh “copies” of both.

  • dise

I’ve downloaded Firefox along with the Greasemonkey extension and installed the PKLaunch userscript. However, everytime I try and click on a music video to view it, all I get is a blank white PKLaunch window with nothing in it. I see the drop down menu at the bottom of the screen along with one hyperlink for Yahoo! Music and another for PKLaunch – but that’s it. What am I doing wrong?

  • Dylan

I dont know, but Im doing the same thing, and it still works…

  • Dustyn

Im a movie trailer whore and sometimes Yahoo! movies is the only place that has a QT version of a trailer I want… think there’s a way similar to this I can get the trailers?

  • Michael

Did you restart Firefox to complete installation?

  • dise

It’s just strange because I can see the videos with IE, but not with Firefox. Do I need some sort of media player plugin or something else besides (1) Firefox, (2) Greasemonkey extension, and (3) PKLaunch userscript?

  • dise

I did restart Firefox. I even restarted the computer. But still no luck. Please help … I need my music videos!!!

  • Mark

awesome, it worked! thanks derek. you rock.

  • Adam

Dise- try making sure that your Windows Media Player plugin for Firefox is working properly. That sounds as though it is the problem. There is a guide here that should help you out with that. Good luck.

  • dise

Man, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong here. It just won’t work. I’ve tried all those walkthroughs; I’ve tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it with all the extensions and still nothing. Everytime I open up a video all I get is a blank white box with the little bandwidth drop down menu at the bottom. I think I need to call Geed Squad or something. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

  • Adam

Dise, if PKLaunch is opening a window, then it’s doing it’s job. You’re getting a white window because either your Window Media Player plugin isn’t working, or you don’t even have it installed on your system. Focus on WMP, not Firefox.

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Dise: Possible solution… Disable all extensions except for GreaseMonkey and retry Yahoo Music with the PKLaunch script.

  • Chris Tico Way

just an advice to Mac Users, if you dont want to get the error Netscape bla bla message please do this:

    1. go to the Artist and click on the watch tv icon
    2. click on the photo of the artist

for instance if you go to top 100 and click on the link for the video, chances are high, it wont work and you are get the netscape message, at least this way works on my mac and on the mac users i have told them.

  • Adam

I’m on a Mac, and I am able to click on the direct link to the video just fine. I never get the Netscape message…

  • http://www.myspace.com/AlexTheMartian Alex Begg

There is a quicker way that bypasses Steps 3 and 4, just right-click on the video of the windows media player itself inside that windows that pops up, and slect ‘Properties’ then copy the uri next to ‘Location:’

  • Diego

Hi… al steps ok, but when I try to play stream video into VLC, it show me the follow error “main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3′.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.”

    (ON MAC OSX)

    Anyone can help me?

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Diego: Were you able to hear any audio when streaming the video?

  • schatten

im getting authfailed in vlc, what am i doing wrong?

  • Ferg

When i get the URL, the big long URL with .asx at the very end doesnt seem to play. It doesnt play in windows media player or in VLC.So if it doesnt play in VLC, its not gona download. anyone know why its not playing?

  • Jak

Same, it’s the video isnt downloading. Perhaps Yahoo have done somthing :(

It will play fine just not download

  • Jak

Never mind I got it working. Thanks Alot for this :)
But as I live in the UK I can’t watch some of the videos so could someone in the US give me the mms links to Boxcar racer videos here:
    http://music.yahoo.com/ar-292428-downloads–Box-Car-Racer
thanks, if you dont have time to do all of the just do I feel so…thanks so much!

  • http://WhatsaURI? Alex

I got stuck at step 5. what is VLC? Any help will be hugely appreciated.

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Right-click and copy the MMS:// URi’s here: “There Is” and “I Feel So”.

  • http://WhatsaURI? Alex

Ops, i downloaded vlc, but im having the same problem as schatten. It keeps coming up with ‘authfailed’ in vlc and not streaming. Anyone know why?

  • Tom

Why don’t the morons at yahoo just get with the times? It’s so embarrassing!

  • tboy

I’m getting the same problem about the white screen. It worked at first, and I got two music videos fine. But then I think it’s because I updated stupid Firefox… I clicked a lil thing ( ithink a red up arrow), it updated, and then it went white. now none of the movies work anymore.

  • Jak

GREAT. Thanks Derek for the links, ive been trying to get these for ages.

    Works perfect :D

  • Caper

Why is it on some videos I get Authfailed, Even tho I do exactly the same thing as what I do to the other videos which work?

  • Adam

To those getting “Auth Failed”: you have to past the ASX uri’s into VLC rather quickly. I tried saving severa; “medialog.txt” files for various videos thinking that i could just go back later and download them- but it doesn’t work. I don’t know if Yahoo has dynamic link changing or something like that, but it seems that the ASX uri in “Medialog.txt” only works for about 2 minutes or less. All I can say is try to get the ASX address pasted into VLC as quickly as possible.

  • Aaron

If you are using OS X I think the fastes way to download the videos is with lyFox. It automatically grabs the MMS ID, even for the 700kb streams. You can search for the videos you want within the app and don’t ever have to open your browser. Just find the video, select get info, copy the mms paste it into VLC and you are set. You can find it here http://fernyb.2ya.com/

  • momo

    Yeahh very cool. Thank you!!!!

  • Legendzy

you know…never mind my comment ill just use the hard way:P

  • Jason

I’m having trouble with the white window now too. I was able to download five videos and then after noticing that my computer was slowing down (checking task manager, firefox was hounding 100+MB) I restarted it. Big mistake since I now only get the white screen ontop of the Bitrate dropdown.

Checked to make sure mplayer plays other wmv streaming files. No luck with the music.yahoo.com files though. Help please.

  • tyler

im on windows xp and i cant get it to work. every time i click watch video i get this:

To use this application with Netscape, you must use a 4.7x or 7.1 version. Download now.

Please use the following error code when writing to Yahoo! Help. (Error Code: 12)

    anyone know why ?

  • justin

Anyone think of doing this for AOL Music Videos?

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

Tyler: That means you don’t have the GreaseMonkey script [PKLaunch] installed and running correctly. If you did, it would catch the request and spawn a new window for video playback.

  • Jak

Grease monkey has just been updated to work in firefox beta 2, but for somereason, it does not allow you to download vids, it brings up the same message Tyler has.
I have PKlaunch installed and enabled but still nothing. Does it work for anyone else?

  • Adam

AOL music videos are extremely easy to rip; it’s just a matter of sifting through source code.

  • tyler

derek: it said that PKLaunch user script was installed successfully. im using firefox beta 1.
i wanna rip these so i can put them on my ipod

  • Erin

I used this method and succesfully downloaded 3 or 4 videos.. but now firefox won’t even play the videos anymore.. I dont know what happened!! HELP!!

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

    Try clearing your browser cache.

  • hmmm

this worked for me last night but when i tried to get videos today, it stopped playing?

i cleared cache. reinstalled browser/extensions/etc… but still not getting the video to play?

  • agreed

yea it’s not working for me either :-( it says “the link could not be saved. the web page might have been removed or had its name changed”

  • http://? Brad

This is not working for some reason?

Grease monkey is installed and smiling, the PK script installed correctly, all I see is a black WMP screen and the option to adjust the bandwidth?

When I go into tools –> page info, I see this

  • Ravi

ok i think yahoo has taken measures to prevent this now because all of a sudden today it no longer works, ive been using flashget and the pklaunch script with nettransport and now it does not download the video, keeps retrying to connect in nettransport, anyone else getting this???

  • Mike

    I get this….

    ERROR

We’re sorry, but you must use Netscape 4.7x to use this application on a Macintosh. Download NOW.

Please use the following error code when writing to Yahoo! Help. (Error Code: 4)

In step 2 I get this:
the pklaunch forced window pop up nicely, but won’t play the video; I tried with both version 0.5 and 0.6rc2. If I continue through the steps, I get Authfailed problem.

    Please help, thanx.

  • hmmm

looks like the new version of pklaunch (v0.6rc2) still not playing the videos. anyone got it working?

  • FireGirl

Try installing the extension user-agent. It should work then. Peace out!

  • Brad

How about a link to said “user-agent”

  • Junior

    http://chrispederick.com/work/useragentswitcher/

it still didn’t work after switching it to IE 6.

  • kushal

Where should I Put Greasemonkey & PK Launch

  • Tecibbar

It finally works for me now!

You guys are the coolest. music and software should be available to the general public.

kushal, you use firfox to open the files. It will install.

  • hmmm

wwooohoo… the new version of pklaunch fixed the problem. hopefully yahooo won’t change their coding too fast

  • Tom

    Hey guys;

what is the new url ?
    I mean instead of “http://launchtoday.launch.yahoo.com/player/medialog.asp?pid=0&csid=0&pguid=0&origin=0&mf=1&bw=300&vid=2142340″
what is the new url, cuz this don’t work!

    thanks
    Tom

  • Pogo

Listen guys, Yahoo has changed some crap so the script has to be changed, to get the latest script go to this site:

    http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/

Install the latest script and everything should be fine again.

  • jump

Hey guys i got the new script installed however, it eliminates the top bar on the brower, so there is no way for me to perform step #3 on this tutorial… i cannot get to tools->page info

  • Tom

    Pogo;
is there any way to get “mediaHash”, “mh” in PHP?
I mean; by going which url you get “mh” variable?

    thanks
    Tom

  • MarzSyndrome

Has anyone actually managed to get the new pkLaunch 0.6rc3 to play any videos? I keep getting the Music Authentication failed thingy all the time. :-(

User Agent Switcher won’t work either, it seems to only play through the proper Launch way (IE, their own window) funnily enough. I hope Yahoo haven’t implemented IE-only protection tricks….

In step #3 you will have to right click near the bottom of VLC player to get the information.

Regarding the white screens in the window that PKLaunch opens (or black screens as they have recently turned into with the latest PKLaunch update), I’ve discovered that if you right click over the bandwidth drop down menu, you should be able to scroll down to “View Page Info” in the menu and continue the steps, even though the video does not play.

  • Dan

hey everbody it works all you have to do is just download new update for pklaunch http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/ then follow the steps but when the video plays just right click and hit properties then on first page you see location copy that and use vcl normal way to find the mms and to download it and please please make sure you sign in for yahoo or it will not work and believe me it works and i hope you understand this

  • Legendzy

I got it to work with the new pklaunch!!
use page info copy media link and place it in adress of normal xploder it’ll download an link .asx play in VLC then and you know the rest:)

  • Tim

I successfully ripped a few videos using these procedures (OSX+Flip4Mac). But recently, when I rip a video, I only get the first two or three seconds of the video. Whether I open the video in WMP, QT, or iTunes, I get the same result – a few seconds of video and then nothing. Any suggestions?

Thanks for developing such a well-documented, useful procedure!

  • DreDay

Please, i need some help. I get all the way to the last step but nothing ever saves, please help?

  • Enigma

Yeah I believe today is the 4th I am trying to do this I have got all the way to the save as but it says that the site isn’t there or its name was changed is there a newer version then: 0.5.3? It seems like fuc*ing yahoo is thirsty to not let us do this. You know that MTV and BET and all these places get the shit for free its for advertisement reasons? They need to just give it to us Damn!

  • MarzSyndrome

Hmmmm, looks like I don’t have to worry anymore!

It appears uninstalling Greasemonkey (even though it was already at 0.5.3), downloading it again from its site, and reinstalling it back into Firefox (and subsequently reinstalling pKLaunch 0.6rc3) managed to make everything work as it should again.

Marz is happy about this. Plus it appears addmusicvideos.com can once again stream Yahoo videos as per usual.

    :-)

  • bugged out

this method does not seem to work anymore, yahoo might be blocking us or something. the asx file no longer contains the stream, now it contains a “stream abusing” message..

  • Nijim

Ok, new problem… I got it to stream through VLC, to DL to a .WMV file, but when i try to open the file with WMP it gives me this error “Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.” Now the files are in a different codec than WMVs i think… dunno how to possibly fix that… any one else have this problem??

  • Eureka

This setup still works, here’s what I did. For Users who cant play videos in firefox.
    For XP users (Quick Setup)
    1. Install Greasemonkey
    2. Install pkLaunch v0.6rc3
    3. Go to music.yahoo.com (Hint: You don’t need to login because the script logs you in as “zcoderz”)
    4. If you can’t get the popup window refresh your browser until you’re login as “zcoderz”.
    5. It’s okay if your video screen is black or white just right click on Bandwidth > View Page Info > Media (tab) > Save As > medialog.txt
    6. Open the file and copy link, Open VLC press CTRL+N, click radio button HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS paste URL in “OPEN” field.
    7. Open playlist then right click on Time Block (ie. (-0:04:18)) select Info.
    8. CTRL+C (We’re copying the URI link)
    9. Bring VLC Player to focus press CTRL+N, paste in URL
    10. Check Stream Output then click on Stream
    11. Check File > Dump Raw Input > Pick a place to save your video with extention *.wmv (ie C:\My Music\Gary Allen – Best I Ever Had.wmv)
    12. You wont see any video when it’s dumping all you have to do is wait for the VLC Player to finish playing the file then you’re done.

    Have fun.

  • Eureka

Sorry Step 10 is Check Stream Output then click on Settings

  • Tweter

    Instead of This
It’s okay if your video screen is black or white just right click on Bandwidth > View Page Info > Media (tab) > Save As > medialog.txt

if you right click the black screen and goto properties you can copy the asx location there

saves a little bit of time

  • Tom

IS THERE A WAY TO GET mediaHash in PHP???
    Please help, stuck here…

For those who are having problems playing vids, heres an alternative. I have same problem, think its a codec.

Use Cocsoft Streamdown. I haven’t tried it with this solution but have used it on other websites that have wmvs.

It works on artist’s web sites (ususally not as much security), mp3.com, and some others.

Another cool site for music vids (not mine) is http://home.comcast.net/~othastar/Music.html

guys it still worked for me! you don’t even need wmp ver. 10 to work, just make sure you have firefox + greasemonkey + pkLaunch v0.6rc3 installed. when you see the video window pop-up, right click on bandwidth, choose view page info and copy the full url in media tab. append “view-source:” before pasting url in firefox. copy new url from notepad page that pops up and do the view-source again before pasting url in firefox. repeat until you get the “mms” url. this will be the final url that you paste in vlc. hope this helps speed it up a bit

I think im having the same issue as Nijim. followed the directions perfectly-even got a couple of vids already. those will play but if i try to download another one, it wont finish downloading. it will stay frozen on the last second – ex: 0:04:01/0:04:01. does anyone know why it could be doin this??

  • chris

ps- after that if u try to open the file in WMP, it wont play, gives an error: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file

  • Katherine

This method worked fine for me today and yesterday. I am able to get the mms with no problem and all the files will play. The only problem I have now is that no media files will play in the firefox browser itself, even ones that worked before. I even uninstalled greasemonkey and pklaunch, but still no luck. Oh well. I guess I’ll have to use the dreaded internet explorer to do that stuff.

Oh, is the vlc media player capable of recording rtsp streaming quicktime files? I don’t think so, so could anyone recommend a good program for that?

  • Evan

hahah ok i think this is shut down cause when i do a view source: of the url from the media tab it redirects to

    view-source:http://us.rd.yahoo.com/launch/video/errors/streamPoachers/notoken/*

STREAMPOACHERS…. lol yea there on to us any other way to do it?

  • munkey_b0y

Katherine, VLC player is capable of capturing realtime streams (RTSP) just use the RTSP uri box instead of the HTTP or MMS boxes when you click ‘Open Network Stream’
you will of course have to get the RTSP URi for the file you want.

  • Unknowndude

My greasemonkey/PKlaunch stopped working, so I installed Firefox 1.5, then went to the greasemonkey extension page and I keep getting a “firefox can’t install software” error, even though I have it enabled. What’s up?

  • http://JoeHorn.ne1.net Joe Horn

It still works, while downloading using vlc it shows no video/audio but when its done, open ir in wmp and it plays with video.

  • Dan

I keep getting when ever i try to open a video. I have greasemonkey and pklauncher installed and both are enabled.

    ERROR

well Unknowndude, greasemonkey v0.6.3 doesnt work for firefox v1.5. However, im pretty sure they released a newer version by now that works with the new version of firefox

  • chris

actually, a new version of greasemonkey is already avaliable-its the pklaunch script that still hasnt released a new version, probably releasing soon though, so just hang in there on the meantime!

  • ben

I am having trouble installing PKLaunch. I right click and there is no option for Install User Script and I’ve also opened it and clicked on Tools and there is no Install User Script option either. Anybody know how I can install it? I have already installed Greasemonkey.

  • Daniel

I have Firefox 1.07, Grease monkey 0.53 and pkLaunch v0.6rc3. I right click on bandwidth and get page info, under the media tab I highlight the link and click Save as. I then get a windows pop up that says “The link could not be saved. the web page may have been removed or had its name changed.”

    Any ideas

  • grv

I have downloaded Firefox, Grease Monkey and have “Installed user script” of pkLaunch as mentioned in Step 1. I use Win XP. After signing into radio.yahoo.com and selecting videos of artists, i clicked on the watch icon. A new wondow opens with the message:
To use this application with Netscape, you must use version 7.1 or above. Download now.

Please use the following error code when writing to Yahoo! Help. (Error Code: 12)

Does anyone know why this is coming up, inspite of the fact that Grease monkey is enabled? Derek, i think you have solved this problem before, haven’t you?

  • Oen

Yeah… supposedly the new PKLaunch does not support Launch.com anymore, yahoo kept updating his site says.

Long story short, older version of firefox might still work, but for the time being if you update everything, it won’t work he says.

  • meskibob

I recently found another website (http://zeo.unic.net.my/2005/12/10/accessing-yahoo-music-with-firefox-part-3/) trying to resolve this same problem, and their answer involved using the FF extension “IE-tab”. I have FF 1.5 and the most recent version of the extension (1.0.6.4) and Launch has been working fine.

Incase you don’t like the IE-tab idea, pkLaunch’s author’s website (http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/) says, as of Dec 1st, that the next version of the script, that actually works with FF 1.5 and greasemonkey, is essentially ready, just a couple minor bugs that are getting worked out.

  • Mike

Yeah don’t even bother trying this, if you follow the instructions exactly, it WILL NOT WORK no matter what you do. Would’ve been awesome if it did though…

  • Unknowndude

It’s because Yahoo keeps changing stuff and you can’t get PKlaunch for 1.5 yet.

  • meskibob

The IE-tab extension is still working fine for me, if that’s what you’re referring to with the “WILL NOT WORK”. I’m still waiting for the new pkLaunch as it looks better than what happens with IE-tab, but atleast there’s a temporary fix for right now.

  • Unknowndude

How do you do it with ie-tab?

  • meskibob

Once you have the extension properly installed, just go to launch.yahoo.com in FF. Click on the FF icon in your status bar (enabled to be there by default in the extension). You should see the icon change to the the IE icon in the status bar and in the address bar. Sign into your account (if you have one). Then just start a video like you normally would (play my station, clicking on the link to a selected video, etc). You should then have the player pop up in a new tab. The one caveat about all this is that the tab the player is nested in fills the rest of the background with your most recent view, but it doesn’t affect playback.

  • Kyle

damn i wish he’d come out with the new pklaunch soon – i wanted to put music videos on my friends ipod before i gave it to him for chirstmas

  • s

kyle, just go back to the old firefox and install pklaunch for it..n just wait till they come out with a pklaunch for the new one

  • famous_burro

i tried downloading greasemonkey, but it always to me to check my security settings. i have allowed it to download but it still tells me to check my security settings. can anyone help

  • http://5thirtyone.com Derek

famous right click on the download link and save to your desktop. then drag it into firefox and it will install.

  • Jason

i dont understand a single thing. its just too confusing. can anyone get me a really clear video of avenged sevenfold – bat country? it doesnt matter if the file is big. as long as the video is really clear.
    thanks.

  • chris

FINALYY!!!!! new version of pklaunch out!!! check it out people! It should now work fine!
    http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/

  • Kyle

it keeps asking me for a username and password and even my yahoo login wont work help plz…….

  • Steve

yeah, same problem here. Can anybody help.

  • Armo

Yeah i had that .htaccess pw prompt problem. U just clear your cookies and relogin. But there’s another problem with hijacking sessions because the Pklaunch script uses predefined cookies, and the url session ids. While downloading music videos i kept accidentally hijacking someones yahoo session. Someone with more intel on this topic should be able to fabricate some kind of exploit for this problem.

  • Armo

i just realized that .htaccess prompt is probobly caused by the hijacking problem. Just in case dont use your legit yahoo account while using greasemoneky with pklaunch.

  • Unknowndude

Now, when I click a video it asks me for a user name and password and I can’t download the medialog file.

  • sdnaskj

im just getting that netscape error. did yahoo change something

  • Chris

The new updates to Pk works fine. It seems that the only videos that can be captured are the ones on the yahoo “Top 100″. When I try to specifically search for a video not on the list; I get referenced to another yahoo site “launchtoday.launch.yahoo.com” where it will ask for a username/password. However, I can see this same video just fine in IE.

  • Patrick Algrim

I still cant install this script.. I do not know why.. I still get an error on the install user script.

  • Unknowndude

For some reason I can view videos that I can find from navigating the site, but when I go to an artist page or search, I cannot download the video.

this may seem obvious, but when i get the music video to pop-up in a new window and start playing, i dont have access to my toolbar so that i can perform the rest of step 3 (windows) – im new to using firefox so does anyone know how i can change my options so that i have a toolbar on my new pop-up window

  • Kevin

nevermind guys, i figured it out

  • Justin

Kevin, what did you do? I tried setting JavaScript to not resize/delete context menus, but that didn’t do anything. I can’t do step 3 unless i have access to that Tools > Page Info heh

  • Justin

nevermind, i figured out how to do it without using the menu. for those of you who are wondering, you just need to right click something below the video, and Page Info is an option there.

the MMS is automaticly copied to your clipboard.

  • Jammerules

    Hello Geeks,

First off, I want to appreciate all those helping noobs like me to do something impossible and for setting up helping forums like this one. Anyways, question time…

I was googling for a software that’s completely irrelevant to this site when I accidentally landed on this site and the curiousity got the best of me and read the whole tut. I then downloaded “Grease Monkey” extension for my firefox browser (version 1.5) from here (http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/) and after that I applied this “pklaunch-0.8.1.user.js” userscript (from here http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/pklaunch-0.8.1.user.js). As instructed, I clicked on the music.yahoo.com link and tried to play a song but sadly, a new window popped up (as told in the tut) but the whole screen was black. Ofcourse, there were other options in the bottom but there was no video at all.

So somebody please help me with this problem

  • polarBear

jammerules, most of use stop using the Greesemonkey script and exclusively use LyFOX, so your answer is use lyfox. :-)

  • Jammerules

    Thanks PolarBear,

    Will try LyFox!

  • KK

If the MMS is copied to the clipboard automaticly, should this be the MMS “8742564677″ (as example)??

At which step i receive the MMS in the clipboard?
After searching for a track and play it until it ends?

Exist there a tut for the new Lyfox?

Thanks everyone for helping me out of this… :-)

  • Jammerules

    Hello Peeps,

OK I downloaded LyFOX and downloaded my first video from Y!Launch using VLC player but you would not believe if I said I reboot my laptop 5 freakin times. Everytime I start downloading a video, the VLC player’s download bar will start moving bit by bit and when it is almost halfway thru, it will god-damn freeze the computer. Somebody please pleeeease help me with any fix for this. Also, is there anyway I could do this process for multiple files?

  • polarBear

when you double click the video in the list that is when it MMS is automaticly copied to the clipboard.

  • Jammerules

Yes Polar Bear,I know that. But after getting all the needed info, when I start downloading the song in VLC – it gets stuck after half way.Let me tell you the steps:
    1. I searched for a song in LyFOX and I got the song
    2. I then double click it and after it says ready to play song I right click on the video file and say “Copy selected:” option
    3. I then paste it in notepad and I get a lengthy string with mms:\\ prefixed
    4. I then open the freaking VLC player (sorry about my frustration!! but it still is bothering me) and click File -> Open Network Stream -> select the radio button (HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS) and paste that lengthy string there
    5. After that,I checked the option button “Stream Output” and click “Settings” button
    6. I then, click the “File” option button and then save that file on the desktop with “no extension”. Infact, I tried with givinig a “.wwmv” extension at this point too…but no luck
7.I then say OK to all the open windows and now the VLC player pretends as if it is downloading and as a proof it has the bar in the bottom of its window. The small button on the bar (download bar) “tip-toes” and after like it reached halfway (sometimes almost to the end also!) the computer freezes. Is this normal to everybody or just me! Please pleeeeeeeease help

try using SDP. It works Great but sometimes it would behave just the way like VLC. Would not download
http://get.to/sdp. You will have to use it with LyFOX though

  • KK

FernyB, you made an excellent job but i think Lyox isn’t working like it should work on OSX.4.4, ’cause i doubleclick on an artists video, see the “ready to play” message but i never see any mms adress in my clipboard/Textedit. i even just can copy video-ID, artist name and track name from lyfox… that’s all.

I’m an idiot, i would say now – but there must be an solution. Would be better if there exist a tutorialon yor website or this on uneasysilence should be renewed.

thanks for reading my problems…i will go to the nuthouse. good night!

  • http://webratsmusic.com/artist-2688-martina-mcbride.php Tom

Hey to avoid alot of confusion, you can go to http://webratsmusic.com/artist-2688-martina-mcbride.php and search for your favorite music video, in the preview video screen, click properties and copy the address there and then do vlc, bookmark time, etc…. and there you go!

Hey to avoid alot of confusion, you can go to http://webratsmusic.com/artist-2688-martina-mcbride.php and search for your favorite music video, in the preview video screen, click properties and copy the address there and then go to step 5. This works with IE better!

  • Stacy

the time block won’t appear unless the video is actually playing on vlc, but i’m pretty sure the mms url that shows up regardless of the timeblock is exactly the same as the one in the time block’s info

so just take the mms that shows up and continue on to the next step, see what happens

  • http://www.myspace.com/xxxslipknotxxxmaggotxxx Malo

I figured out a way to download many at once using LyFox and VLC. When you search for your artist in LyFox, double click on the video and copy the code. With the VLC playlist window open go to manage-add MRL, In the new window go to network, click the HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS bullet, paste your MMS URL into that box, Click the stream output box then click on the settings box beside it, click the file box, then click browse and select a place you would like to save the video, then put the name of the video and .WMV on the end, make sure you click the “dump raw input” box, after that click ok and ok, then go back select another video, change the URL and the .wmv name to match the new video, then just keep adding, after you are through adding, or if you want to get a head start, double clicking the top URL activates the downloads then it goes from there down the list, the current download will be in BOLD, So it is basically the same thing listed here except it skips a steo and its easier/faster.

I seriously love you guys. Especially whoever made the Flash animation. Much more explainatory for me than the actual tutorial. *Dances with Joy* My problem of not being able to watch vids on my laptop due to no internet is no longer a problem. :)

  • http://www.thisisnthappening.org Nolla

Okay. I’ve been trying for SO long to get this to work, but the videos just don’t play when I go to the Yahoo! site.

Can anyone PLEASE help me out with this?

  • pockets
  • Eduardo

Um, i installed the script, and installed correctly, but it is not working. my window still opens regularly without the menu bar.

  • roninn

I think that the mms links from Yahoo launch can’t be downloaded like this anymore. I just tried both with Flashget and Net Transport with no success

  • FernyB

Everything works perfect, use VLC or SDP for windows, on VLC you might get some error just ignore them and everything works fine. On Macintosh you only have one choise and that is to use VLC, you might get some error saying TCP could not open connection or something like that it is usually 2 errors just ignore the dialogs and it downloads the videos fine. and this is using LyFOX to retrive the MMS URL.

  • DEMON-X

can som1 plz tell me how to save the music file on vlc-0.8.4a

  • Mat

Um, I get a black screen and no video. I cannot right click. It has the highlight-over-text mouse. Can some one help me out?

  • FernyB

Use LyFOX, if anyone else post after me they got to be really stupid.

  • Noob

I installed greasemonkey and the pklauncher but the music videos don’t open in the pklauncher. im using a PC and if anyone could help i would gladly appreciate it.

  • FernyB

Hey Noob use LyFOX instead of PKlaunch its easier.

  • Brent

Maybe I missed the reply, but I’m having the problem that ‘Jump’ logged (6 Months – 2 weeks ago)….

Hey guys i got the new script installed however, it eliminates the top bar on the brower, so there is no way for me to perform step #3 on this tutorial… i cannot get to tools->page info

What should I do about this?

  • Brent

…… I’m using Windows Media Player 9. Does that prevent the top bar on the top of the bar from appearing? (preventing me of performing step #3)…..

    Thanks All…..

  • Anand

    Hi,
I am using PKlaunch. I am not trying to download the video, all I am doing is to try to get the same thing that works in Windows to work under linux. PKLaunch makes mplayer plugin play the video and this works. But my problem is that it stops working if I _navigate_ to a different page (in music.yahoo.com) and try to play a different video. Is this because PKLaunch strips some session cookies? PKLaunch seems to create its own headers, can it use the browser http headers?

  • Cozza

I’m also a noob. I just use Firefox and I can’t get the download to work. I open up the Yahoo video in a new window, right click on Page Info, go to the media tab and all I can see is a bunch of .jpeg and .gif files. I’ve tried this with a few videos. I’ve already downloaded the PKLaunch and did everything the tutorial said. Please help.

  • joey

Yes cozza the same thing is happening to me the vid opens in a window called somethink like http://mv.us.music.yaho... but when i look for it in the page info i cant find the page or how it is above in the picture posted in the tutorial can any1 help

  • paul

  • Lee

Hi Paul! To tell you the truth I don’t know much about coms but I catch up up somehow.

I want to learn how to download music videos from yahoo. I already dowloaded the Firefox, the pklaunch, greasemonkey (although somthing is wrong. I think) and the VLC. One problem damn thing is in Chinese. I can’t read it.

Now I found this site called http://www.zfeez.com im able to dowload videos but when I try to upload in Youtube it wont work. How how d carabaw? Do you know paul?

  • paul

Hmm well try to copy this adress into ur browser http://www.videolan.org/mirror.php?mirror=http://mirrors.optralan.com/videolan/&file=vlc/0.8.5/win32/vlc-0.8.5-win32.exe
then once uve got that go to http://www.fernyb.net/ and download lyfox once uve done all this jus open lyfox and type the artist or video which is on yahoo which i want to get and it should come up double clik the video that u want and then near the bottom of lyfox u shud c a arrow which u need to clik which will drop down with more info when u clik that it sould show u a mms link then u must copy that whole link now u can exit lyfox
now open up vlc and goto file open network stream and u will c about 4 boxes u have to mark the box called HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS and then paste the link that u copied from lyfox in the url box, once uve done that mark the box called Stream/Save and clik setting, on setting mark the box called File then clik browse and name ur file to watever u want to call it ok that and then clik the box called dump raw data then scroll to the bottom of the page and clik ok then ok the other box and the lan player will go back to its main page after a few seconds u will c the player bar at the bottom move which is the player saving ur file once the player bar has stopped ur file should be saved all u now have to do is put .wmv at the end of ur file
(I NO THAT MY ENGLISH IS VERY BAD DONT FLAME ME ANY1)

  • paul

  • Lee

Ok Paul Ill try It now. I just saw you reply awhile ago. Don’t worry your English is quite well.

  • Lee

Paul do I still need the firefox? and the one that you ask me to get first is the VLC before getting the lyFox at Ferny’s site right?

  • Lee

Hey Paul Your a great teacher! I could just kiss you! joke only, hehehe! But there is one problem how come it only plays about 17 seconds? Paul help! ; )

Tbh i thought that when u read wat i wrote, u was gona reply with “WTF R U TALKING ABOUT” but u did it neway nice 1

  • Lee

    You said it! ; )

It took me til 2:30 in the morning to get it all. At first it didn’t work out on my first try slightly frustrated but at least it was working. Then I tried it again and “voila” it worked! You can’t imagine how happy I was!

Thanks again! Good thing you explained it a little better than the one posted at the top. But you know if my computer is in English I might understand a little better. But anyways its ok now.

By the way do I still need the firefox or I can just delete it? Or if I delete, Lyfox can’t work?

  • paul

Emm Lee Tbh i dont no if it will work without firefox, but from wat ive herd firefox is a safer browser to use then I.E neway so u should jus keep it.

  • Lee

Ok if you say so. Thanks Paul! : )

  • paul

    LoL np:)
Yo Ferny B is there a way of getting the yahoo videos without them being censored becus its very fucking irritating when they black out the explict words

  • paul

O yeh 1 other thing ferny do u no why lyfox doesnt find some videos
e.g u search “the streets” and only “fit but u no it comes up” do u no why this is or how to find the other videos
    thx man :]

  • Kelly

I can’t find the source for the videos. I can get the video to play fine in firefox but when I do the page info the source for the video isn’t there.
    Help please :-D

  • Lee

Hey Kelly, ask Ferny! go to his site at http://www.fernyb.net/ then go to contact ask him from there. You’ll get answers faster. He is a whiz at this!

  • Andy

Paul, I read your guide and everything looked cool.
But I had one problem. I couldn’t find the dump raw data.
    I can’t scroll down either.
I’m not sure what I’m doing honest lol.
    Help me if you can.
    Thanks

  • Secret

    Andy,
The dump raw is a check box next to the browse button and what he meant by scroll down was just move the mouse to the ok button.

  • Andy

    Oh now I get it.
    Thanks a lot Secret. =)

  • Paul

Hmm i only jus checked back on this page have u done it now andy

  • Andy

    Ya I got everything now.
I didn’t get where the dump raw data was.
    Thanks for checking in Paul.

  • Paul

    np Andy :)
Btw does any1 know how to save macromedia flash videos straight from a site
    e.g http://www.faithsfx.co.uk
    Thx

  • Andy

I’m not postive about this method but I think you can capture the flash on SnagIt or camstudio. I heard this works with most flashes from my friends as they record everything with Snagit.
I think you should give it a try.

  • VICTOR

I cannot get it to work! I have greasemonkey enabled, the pklaunch installed but everytime I open a video i get this message:

    ERROR

We are experiencing technical difficulties right now, please try again later.

Please use the following error code when writing to Yahoo! Help. (Error Code: 24)

  • david

I can’t seem to get VLC to download properly. Typically, the stream works fine until maybe around 3/4 of the way, at which point it appears yahoo closes the stream. I’m on XP if that makes a difference (from what I’ve been reading of the comments it might). It’s possible that my internet connection is just poor, but this is unlikely.

Any reason using a download manager with the mms doesn’t work? Any way to fix that?

  • Enrico

Help am like lost…. am trying 2 d/l a vblog in youtube…but as far as i noe u cant so far and not sure if u can now… i got dat greasemonky…. am like al lost in dis area if some could please help me out ^^

  • Ryan

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to rip AOL videos. I really want this one video and I don’t know how?

  • Scott

I am new to this, have installed everything right it seems, yet when I open up the video, it just loads in the standard yahoo player. I can get to the page info by right clicking on the area above the video in the blue background and selecting info, but when I go to the media tab all the objects are images or something, all the embed files are shockwaves. I uninstalled all other firefox extensions, not sure why I can’t get these to work… is it still a valid method to get yahoo vids?

  • Scott

nevermind that last post i restarted my comp and got into the normal pklaunch screen but its blank grey…

  • mac

i got this to work but the video can’t be fast forward or rewind. it just plays straight through. can anyone help me convert this into a format so it can actually be fast forward or rewind or go to certain spot in the video?.thnx alot.

  • Ahmed

this method is a crap. i have downloaded and installed everything but nothing happens. everytime it opens the yahoo standard media player. i dont wat really is the problem. i have wasted my 3 hours on this f**king method.

  • james

    this worked for me:

    install mediaplayer connectivity and greasemonkey extensions;
    install the pkLaunch userscript;
when you have the new window with the video open right click and ‘find all media links on page’; when the list (will just be one) comes up, click the + until you get the mms:// url and copy that and use mplayer or vlc to download it.

(this works without any quicktime/wmp/realplayer plugins)

  • FooManFat

what version of VLC is this tutorial using?

  • FooManFat

and i can’t get the videos to save as anything other than that *file thing

  • Dane Cook

If you are using a pc this is the easiest way to do this
First download and install SDP Multimedia found here http://sdp.ppona.com/

    1. Run PkLaunch like the tutorial says
    2. Right Click on the video when it starts playing and hit properties
    3. Select and Copy the link on the LOCATION section of it
    4. Run SDP Multimedia and hit the Open button and paste the link
    5. When it pops up would u like to save the location file hit no.
    6. Hit the Go button at the top and when the prompt comes up name the file whatever u want and hit ok. It will then download.

This technique is much easier and quicker than the one in the tutorials

  • Kyle

I have greasemonkey and pklaunch, but how do you get the music video to open in the pklaunch window? thanks.

  • Justin

I’ve been able to do everything, but the videos are very jumpy. Are there any solutions to this problem?

  • Troy

Dane cook, good one by the way, I tried your method of using the SDP multimedia downloader and I get this error. Connecting…
    > Resolving DNS IP address, please wait…
    > CONNECTED at: 12:54:20 PM Date: 3/14/2007
    > Server Address: 209.73.189.xxx

    > Initialising streaming protocol, waiting for reply…
    > TCP network timing packets received
    > Server Error Message : You do not have access to the location or file
    > Disconnected

Do you have any idea why that would occur? Thanks

  • n3mesis

Not sure what im doing wrong but when i right click the link above to install the pklaunch .js user script with grease monkey, it doesn’t have a install option, just to ‘view user script source’. How do i install the script?

  • n3mesis

ok, got the pklaunch to work by going to there website, but is there anyway to convert the .wmv files to .flv? the programs im using now just freeze up or dont convert the file.

  • Kushal

  • http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2005/08/4002/ How-To: Download Music Videos from Yahoo Launch with VLC

[...] Update 10/16: The updated tutorial for download music videos from Yahoo! Launch is here: How-To: Downloading Yahoo! Music Videos with Firefox & VLC. [...]

  • josh s.

i am trying to download a video from yahoo.com and i have no idea how to find the stream address. the music video is skillet’s rebirthing. if anybody can tell me how to find the stream address that would be great.

  • http://www.istanbuldayurtlar.com Halil

You can download yahoo videos with http://www.vidoho.com/download.php
Also other video sharing sites you can download videos. For example: Myspace, Youku.com, Video.qq.com, Vsocial, Clipfish, Rutube.ru, Videa.hu etc…

  • Dane Cook

I don’t know if any of these methods work anymore since yahoo switch from using windows media video files to flash video files. I can’t get pklaunch to work anymore.
If you still want them someone needs to find a way to download the flv files

  • toby

when ever i have vlc installed and i try to download torrent files, firefox immediately tries to open it with vlc instead of uTorrent, i cant figure out how to change the settings so it automatically opens with uTorrent rather than vlc, does anybody know how to correct this?????

  • Tina

Ok, so this method no longer works for Yahoo videos. I tried using Firefox plug-in “downloadhelper” but it seems that the yahoo video is a streaming flv file…….

  • Paul

Downloadhelper works for me on Yahoo! videos.

  • Dev

I’m having trouble gettin’ the “mms” address.
I used to do this be4, now it dsn’t wrk!

  • http://www.jazzgall3.com Rheinangeln

For me it also does not work :-(

  • Shawn

Use Orbit and open Grab++ from the tools menu. Works to get all kinds of vids, although I have only tried to on Yahoo and YouTube. Works perfect.

  • Nickii

Shawn is exactly correct i use it to download anything and everything, its the #1 thing for me to use to download yahoo videos, or any video

  • spyder

For downloading videos and music from any other site than Yahoo try out: http://netvideohunter.com

  • Anna

If you are a Mac user, you can download any videos and music from Yahoo with Elmedia Player PRO – http://mac.eltima.com/yahoo-video-downloader-mac.html
