How-To: Daily del.icio.us blog postings [WordPress]

Credit goes to Jackson for inspiration to create this tutorial. I’ve taken the liberty to add a few visual cues to make sure everyone knows what’s what. If you can’t read, watch the short Flash video tutorial here.

I’m assuming that those interested in this tutorial have (a) an active del.icio.us account, and (b) a personal weblog. The advantage of having links automatically posted is two-fold. First off, it can be considered “good” filler for your slow posting days. Secondly, your links must be important. Maybe someone else might find them equally useful / important. The end result will be daily posts similar to the screenshot below containing all your favorite marks for the day.

Step 1: This first step is optional. When del.icio.us creates a post for your WordPress weblog, it will automatically assign a defualt category. If you’re content with utilizing an existing category, move on to the second step. If not, I highly recommend a dedicated ‘Del.icio.us’ category. Log into your WordPress ‘Dashboard’ and select ‘Manage’ > ‘Categories’. Add a new category and title it appropriately. Next to your newly created category, make a note of the category ID next to the category name.

Step 2: Under your del.icio.us user ‘Settings’ navigate to ‘Daily Blog Posting’ in the right hand column. Select ‘Add New Thingy’. You’ll be presented with the following fields:

job_name: This is the name of your del.icio.us posting qeue. Name the job whatever you want. It does not affect the resulting linklog post.
out_name: Enter your login username for your WordPress blog.
out_pass: Enter your corresponding password.
out_url: Enter your blog URL. http://[domainname.com]/xmlrpc.php.
out_time: Enter the time you wish your post to be made. Make note of the location of your server adjust your time appropriately.
out_blog_id: 1
out_cat_id: Recall the ‘Category’ ID you made note of in the first step? If you’re using an existing category, enter the corresponding ID.

Your daily links will be posted once a day at the time you’ve established above. If you add 5 marks to your del.icio.us account on one day, the corresponding blog posting will contain 5 links (with descriptions and tags). If you go crazy and mark 15+ links, your blog posting will contain 15+ links.
