Apple Aperture: Competition for Photoshop?

It looks like Apple is finally dipping its toes into the professional photo editing arena with a standalone application by the name of Aperture.

Designed from the ground up for professional photographers, Aperture provides everything you need for after the shoot, delivering the first all-in-one post-production tool for photographers.

Apple – Aperture

You can check out more screenshots of Aperture in action here. Judgin by the screenshots you’re probably going to want a nice Cinema Display in order to view / edit your photo collection. What are your thoughts? Apple software friendliness for “professional” grade photo editing with a $500 price tag? Or a fully featured graphics application like Photoshop CS2 for a similar price?

if I was a professional photographer dealing with RAW image files… judging by the “Quick Tours” on the Apple site… I’d pick Aperture… as a graphic designer/web designer I would pick photoshop. From what I have seen Aperture is Photoshop on Steriods FOR AND ONLY FOR Photographers…

For the professional photographers this will be a really nice tool to have and use. 500 USD is not even that bad for it. Just think how much they charge for an hour of work. Apple also offers educational discount, which drops the price to about 250 USD. Not bad at all.

One of the strengths of Aperture is the ability to work with RAW files and always display them at the highest possible quality. It also has built in functions that use Apple’s Core Image (hardware accelerated) processing technology… this one will probably speed things us wuite a bit on the newer Macs.
