How-To: Make your real Mac say Intel inside

So all you bondafide Apple hardware users are left twidling your thumbds as you read stories left and right about OSx86 installations on current Intel powered desktops / laptops. What’s there to do for you?

Well how about tweaking your current Mac to display a custom processor in the About this Mac box?

Start TextEdit and open /System -> Library -> CoreServices -> loginwindow.app -> Contents -> Resources -> English.lproj -> AboutThisMac.strings. Navigate to the bottom of the document; for single CPU machines, find this string:

“ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT” = “%@”;

For multiple CPU machines, find this:

“ABOUT_BOX_MULTIPLE_PROCESSORS_FIELD_FORMAT” = “%@”;

Change the %@ to whatever you want your new CPU to be, like, say “Pentium 133mhz w/ MathBug Technology.”

Personally, I’d probably make mine read powered by dual BMW V12′s. No? Is that too tacky? Well if you’re one of the abnormal Mac users trying to make the operating system mimic that found on plastic Windows boxes, this would be a definite “to-do” item. Make youre dual G5 read something like 1GHz Celeron.
